How did they afford to go to the USA?

I have always wondered how the Sisters early trips to the USA in 83/4 were funded? I would guess they were self financed in the pre WEA days and if so it must rate as quite an achievement for a relatively unknown 'indie' band to go to the states.

I would guess Brain Eater contributed heavily

gary marx's girlfriend at the time (she's now his wife) was and still is a successful businesswomen owning a chain of nail bars and beauty salons in leeds and west yorks
http://www.mintsalons.co.uk/
as i understood it she helped bankroll some of the very early sisters activities (at a guess i'd say drum machines, portastudios, tour vans etc) until they got more established
that's what i've been told anyway
not sure if she would have stretched to funding a jaunt like that, but she certainly helped with some of the finances early on.

Ask Jeeves what he dreams about and he dreams about Quiff Boy. we need an "Ask Barry" section on here cos damn, plethora of untapped Sisters information he is.

Check for unsolved bank robberies in the vacinity of each gig.

Nice answer Boss
If memory serves, the band were still signing on until they signed to WEA, so they had to have had "outside assistance" early on to help with the up-front recording and touring costs.
Good question

That's an excellent question and should make people think.

Didn't Reptile and - particularly - Temple sell by the bucket-load too? And unless I'm mistaken, by Oct/Nov 83 the band would have been in negotiation with, if not already signed to, Warners.

Depends on how much they owed Gary's girlfriend! From what I can remember of interviews, any money made by the band was ploughed back into things like bigger PA's and keeping Jez Webb (guitar tech) and Pete Turner (sound engineer) in food and beer. I have no idea who did the driving. They would also have had to have been pretty careful not to let the DHSS/DSS find out about any earnings, etc. Unless they'd managed to get onto the Enterprise Allowance Scheme, which they could've used to set up the Merciful Release label and funnelled money through that.
Even if they were in negotiations with Warners, The Sisters wouldn't have had any advances until after they'd signed. That probably covered the '84 US tour, but not the jaunt in '83.

Hence all the runaround with the pseudonyms. Andrew Taylor might have been signing on but Andrew Eldritch wasn't...

this is still the correct answer to the initial question, though the other information provided is interesting
TOL tour of US arranged by Braineater was in Sept. TOL was only released in the US as 7" in Oct (and then the UK). WEA didn't happen until after Elektra (very late 83) and which was being headed up (ish) by the man who until then had been in charge at Braineater

I completely missed that post!
They just had the US distribution didn't they? I seem to remember Andrew mentioning in an interview how difficult it was to get independent distribution and no single distribution company, except for the majors, had complete coverage of the US which is why the first tours of the US were so small.

I can't remember the exact line but there's something Eldritch said (more than once IIRC) along the lines of "I must be the only person in Rock who didn't join a band to try to get laid".

Glad my initial question has got a few thinking.
On the topic of stage names and signing on didnt Playdeads singer have to stop signing on when someone in his dole office recognised him from Playdeads Into the Fire video?

Isn't that what you do when you're in a band? There are some who would argue that it's the whole point.
