Picture the scene, at work, in a warehouse, listening to a debate on Radio 2 about the drought.

Zaltys7:I think everyone should have a water metre, then we would all pay for what we used.

Work mate: I don't, why should I pay extra to fill my swimming pool.

Zaltys7: Maybe because you have a fuking swimming pool.

Work mate: Water is free, it comes out of the sky, why should I pay for it at all?

Zaltys7: water is a precious resource, fresh water is gonna be the cause of wars before we know it.

Work mate: there are a million illegal immigrants in this country, if they all went back, we would have enough water.

Yes, I kid you not, I had this conversation today with a real human being, the drought is the fault of illegal immigrants.

It's enough to make you...

1) i'm surprised that in UK (?) water meter is not a must or at least optional, esp if Pooland in most homes it installed because: a) you pay what you use ergo you save it.
2) You work with stupido man

I sir, know your pain :urff:
I could tell dozens of those stories, but I rather not. :|

so, you folks do pay for your water but every address just the same or is it free?
over here (Belgium) we all have a watermeter. so we just pay for what we use, and apparently they are working on taxes for those who use rainwater  but hey that is just because it is belgium.

Finite resource, more people, less resource to go around I suppose. There's some logic to it. I'd have thought building on flood plains, concreting reservoirs over and flogging the land to developers, and concentrating everything in the South East were all far bigger problems though.
Lovely and green here in Lincolnshire, by the way! If you want our water you can buy it from us at about a hundred a barrel. It's more important than oil, so stands to reason. :D

problem is that given somewhere in the region 30% of all treated water doesn't make it to the tap, through leaks in the network, it's not in the providers interest to openly declare this fact. To put this in context, the total domestic consumption for a given supply area is somewhere in the region 3% of that treated.

a positive is that, even without metering, average consumption has dropped from around 200 l/d to nearer 160l/d and is still dropping towards the OFWAT target of 150 l/d ( but has a very long way to go to return to Victorian levels of around 30 l/d

...and your mate should already be being metered for his swimming pool

* boring industry speak from project manager about to complete construction of new reservoir and at present calculating the future demand figures and strategy for his supply area ;D

For context... we pay around $1200 p.a for water (about 800 of your fine Stirling coin). Of course we are a wide brown land with no water...

to be fair, if all you immigrants weren't living there the indigenous peoples of australia would have much more water to go around

There's two good reasons against your suggestion Iz

It would take at least a lorry load to fill the pool and it would start to smell a bit after an hour or so

Beer was drunk in Victorian Times more than water in England because it was safer. Less disease in it. They've been talking about water charges here (N. Ireland) for ages. No-one has the courage to do it. Political suicide, even if morally right.

Certainly NOT metred for his swimming pool, from what I can gather he fills it with a hose pipe! Maybe it's heated, it's not like I know much about private swimming pools :)

There are just as many (if not more) people like that, as there are people like us.

Go figure.

Can we change the topic title from "stupid people" to "evil people"?

Because that's what that kind of bigotry is. Evil.

Fine by me, go for it mark, although I'm not sure that my work colleague falls into the same catagory as Idi Amin or Pol Pot.
