New York Ritz 1991 Opener

Hey guys,

Does anyone remember who opened for The Sisters at the Ritz, NYC 1991? I was there and I have a strange memory of who it was, but I'd like some independent confirmation, if anyone knows.

The official site says "Danielle Dax (?)" but that's not my recollection, or at least not the only band I recall.

PS: 30 March 1991 to be precise.

Hi dtsom,

The Public Enemy/Go4 tour was in the summer. That NYC show was in July at Radio City Music Hall.

Hard to believe, but they played NYC twice that year, and I am asking about the first show, in March.

Thank you for your reply!

Best,
Trevor

I guess it was Danielle Dax. I found a review of the show from the NYT archives, and she's the only artist they mention:
April 1, 1991
Reviews/Pop; Onstage: Gloom and Smoke; Off: Black Clothes and Angst
By JON PARELES

...Danielle Dax sold herself short as the concert's opener. On her albums, she is shrewd and eccentric; her songs and arrangements can be wide-eyed or oblique, and they use simple rock patterns with a broad streak of parody. On stage, the parody was lost while the simplicity remained. Her band stomped through three-chord blues-rock or two-chord funk vamps while Ms. Dax, dressed as a standard pop sexpot in black hotpants and a blonde bouffant, undulated her hips and let the band drown out most of her singing. Perhaps pretending to be a second-string Siouxsie and the Banshees is a commercial gambit, but any new fans Ms. Dax garners will get more than they bargained for.
For some reason I recall Sonic Youth opening. But I see Sonic Youth played the same venue later that year, and I must have conflated the two. I was younger then... but it's funny, I've always had this memory of seeing Sonic Youth opening for The Sisters. Oh well.

found my ticket stub (i saw them 4 times in 1991, including RCMH) - no opener printed on it, and memory does not serve me well....

There were 2 LA shows on that tour. Smaller venue had Danielle Dax opening. Larger venue had Gene Loves Jezebel and Danielle Dax.

Oh, that's new to me... ...

One LA-gig was definitely on April 12, but the second one? Do you remember the exact date and place?

Now I don't think Sonic Youth ever opened for the Sisters. They do did the tour with Neil Young though... a spot Eldritch wouldn't have said no too either (he told once in an interview IIRC).

It was either the next night or 2 nights later. It was at Irvine Meadows, now called Verizon Ampitheater. After the initial show sold out so quick, the 7,000 seater, the local alt rock station sponsored another show at an outdoor 17,000 seater and added GJL to the bill. It was too late to put the date on the tour programmes, t-shirts, etc. They also gave away free cassette singles of Detonation Blvd remix at the gates. It's the "single version" that appears on ASCOO.

Oh, I see ... I didn't know that Irvine Meadows is part of LA. The gig was on the 14th and is listed in the Wiki.

Very interesting additional info, though ... I shall integrate that some way or other under both dates ...

Thank you a lot ... :notworthy: ...

Danielle Dax opened for the show in Toronto in '91 at Massey Hall. Never heard of her before I went and never heard about her after the show since :)

Regarding the opener it seemed to only have been Danielle Dax, at least according to this review.

Btw, must be the above mentioned review Andrew refers to when they later played at RCMH?
Also found a review for that show.

Oh, I got too much spare time..
