Currently pissed off at having been burgled on Friday night.

Final score: The TV, my laptop and iPod, Kerry's Nintendo DS and her camera, and my car.

I was in the house and had left the front door unlocked. Bastard.

Happened to me about 10 years ago, I still have an acute OCD thing about doors & windows

..just discovered I actually don't own enough goods to meet the lowest valuation for insuring my new apartments contents. That'll teach me to go for the whole "simple living" thing..

As you might imagine, I've not been able to get online much. Some bastards nicked my laptop.

Still, I'm vaguely tickled by the notion that when someone buys it from Cash-Converters or wherever and boots it up, they'll have a nasty surprise when it boots into Linux.

In the final analysis, it's only stuff, and stuff can be replaced. The burglar(s) didn't make a mess; the worst we've had to clean up is the aluminium powder from the SOCO (unsuccessfully) dusting for prints.

If that happened to me, I were completely ruined for I can't afford any insurance beyond the statutory. On the other hand, I don't own a TV, a camera, an IPod and all such stuff. Only my old car. If this got stolen, I wouldn't even see a pence from the insurance. Too old and no coverage, anyway.

Yes we're insured. Thankfully!

The home contents insurance has already said they will pay up. It would be different if I'd left the door unlocked and gone out, but as I was in, they've accepted that.

I've not heard back from the car insurance yet but I'm still hopeful that the police will find my car. (I just hope that they don't find a burnt-out shell.)

Yes indeed. That's the most disturbing part of the whole thing.

What had happened is that we had gone to mrs fiend's sister's house for some food and drinks. (She only lives a couple of minutes walk away.) I was tired and left early and left the front door unlocked so mrs fiend could get back in. Eventually she decided to stay overnight at her sister's house (to avoid disturbing me) and texted me to say "don't wait up". Unfortunately by this time I had already fallen asleep.

And then I woke up in the morning, and went downstairs to find the front door open, and all the stuff missing.

I think the burglars must have know that there was someone (me!) in the house because while they took the few things I mentioned (they took the car keys, which is how they stole the car) there were several equally valuable things they didn't take; Kerry's laptop from work for example, a DVD player, a few other things. They probably were only in the house for a minute at the most.

f**king tossers.....happened to me in 2003--it's the thought that somebody has been in your house that's most annoying I find,I don't envy you that you were in the house at the time,I don't know if I could handle that...

Yeah. I have been dwelling on that a bit. "What if I'd fallen asleep in the front room", "what if I'd heard something and come downstairs while they were in the house", that sort of thing.

You can't live your life on "what if"s and coulda woulda shoulda though. :shrug:

Being burgled sucks. But hey, it's only stuff, we're insured, and at least they didn't trash the place.

That's what the copper who came to the house reckoned must have happened, yes.

Although I know that they don't do it every night because we've left the door unlocked all night before. Never again.

I've lived on the same street for thirty years. I still,as a matter of course,lock the front door if I go upstairs/in the bath/have a nod on the sofa. I've done this before and forgot to unlock it,and been sat on the sofa when someone has tried the door. Having got up expecting to let my irate girlfriend in,only to find noone out there at all,I assure myself that I am doing the right thing.

I am notoriously lackadaisical with door locking when I go to bed AND I sleep with the duvet over my ears, so if anyone was to get in I wouldn't hear them - I handed over all responsibility of key usage to Gary (he has to have something useful to keep him occupied)

Like you, it wouldn't be the stuff that bothered me so much as the fact someone had snuck in to my private space.

Sucks. We were burgled years back when I still lived with my parents. My dad was a minister and they must have known that we'd just taken home sponsor money for banking the next day cos that's all they took. Then we got burgled again about a year or two later. They took my dad's pocket watch (birthday present from us), some of my mum's jewellery and something of my sister's although I can't remember what. I escaped in terms of stolen possession but it still came down to the fact that someone had been in our house. Twice.

I now live in a top storey flat (not likely to be burgled but a bugger if the roof needs repaired), which had bolts and a chain on the door when I bought it. I always put them all on and wish I could work out a way of doing it when I go out too.

The home contents insurance have been very quick, I'm getting a new TV and laptop delivered tomorrow. They're also sending us Argos vouchers for the other stuff.

I'm just hoping that the car insurance comes through as well...

I am not sure of the correct terminology in these circumstances but you do have my condolonces and sympathy and I am sure the bastards will burn in hell.

At least it was only "stuff" that can easily be replaced.

We left the front door (wide) open a couple of times throughout the night, surprisingly, living at a tram stop and in the middle of town, nothing ever disappeared. But I imagine when it does, tis not a nice feeling. Ugh.

Mmmmm, Argos And The Laminated Book Of Dreams. Being burgled stinks - happened to me in Leeds years ago (Beechwoods, they figured that all the students had gone home, what they thought they'd find worth nicking was anyone's guess), very nasty feeling to know that someone was in your home, going through your stuff. Blegh.
