it seems i'm going to be in dusseldorf at the end of september for a week - my uncle is getting married there and there's bit of a get together planned

i'm planning on heading over for the wedding & reception, which is on saturday 29th sept, but i thought i might stay a few days either beforehand or after

do any of our german contingent know if there is anything good going on in or around dusseldorf at that time? clubs, gigs, etc?

and if there isn't anything, what other cities are nearby and easy to get to via train? i could always stay in a different city for the rest of the trip

Düsseldorf has a ginormous expo hall, that's about all I know about it. Perhaps something's on there when you're there? It's called Messe...

Other than that, Cologne is just around the corner, and that's a splendid city to visit

Dusseldorf is a wonderful place. Unfortunately, there are no interesting trade fairs in September. They do have some interesting museums, though. For example the Museum Kunstpalast who have a pretty glas collection under their roof as well. And it is all quite close to the Old City and the Kö, the famous shoping mall. It's a nice atmosphere there, for a walk or a coffee ...

As to gigs or clubs, I don't know. Should be best to check for any events later in June or July.

Anyway, I live in Cologne, and as Obviousman says, that's a lovely city as well ... especially, since The Sisters are going to play there soon ... ...

there ain't that much to do in Dusseldorf Boss, been there twice in the last couple of years (it's a great place to visit, some brilliant shopping in the old town, and great restaurants and bistros, I really like it...but it's pretty quiet) Train to Cologne and Bonn aren't to expensive (use the local trains as they're cheaper) to get too, nor are they too far away...just make sure your hotel is on a tram line or close to the U-Bahn

When you get the train to Cologne or Bonn from the HauptBahnhof in Düsseldorf, keep your eyes peeled out of the left side of the carriage facing the front....and that's all I'm gonna say on the subject

Oh well, I just won't comply with the common idiocy. I like Dusseldorf (and I prefer Alt to Kölsch which is almost a crime over here).
Dusseldorf is a very wideflung city with wonderful places, mostly widespread, though.

There are historical reasons for that funny attitude of some people here in Cologne and over there.
Competition surely plays a major role. Also nowadays. Just think of football and ice hockey, or of
the political, economical and cultural importance and position of these two cities located so close to
each other ... However, if you want to know the origin of that "strife" in detail,
there are two main historical reasons ...

a) the staple right Cologne possessed from 1259 on which meant a large disadvantage to Dusseldorf and other traders and

b) the Battle of Worringen ...
