Yes, it's a football post.

So, as an ardent Leeds fan I was personally absolutely disgusted by what happened.
I was also disgusted at Dave Jones' comments afterwards.
According to him, I and all other Leeds fans are vile animals.

Thoughts?

I'm not a Leeds fan but I was also disgusted by the actions of that fan.

This is taken from a post on another forum:

I've seen on various messageboards, Twitter etc a lot of Leeds fans trying to deflect the blame and pass the buck. I was at the game and saw/heard -

- Hundreds/thousands of Leeds fans sing "Dave Jones is a paedophile", "There's only one Jimmy Savile" and "Jimmy Savile will * who he wants" etc

- Dozens ripping up advertising hoardings and throwing them onto their own fans on the lower tier

- Dozens ripping seats from their bolts and throwing them at police, home fans and onto the pitch, as well as other missiles

- At least a hundred fans charging stewards and police towards the front of the stand

- Several invading the pitch and one attacking a Wednesday player

Regarding the Dave Jones chants I can understand why he'd be upset and why he'd give an interview like he did.

Surely you're not going to defend such chants?

Nope certainly not defending the chants. I've heard those chants directed at him for years now and I've never joined in. We're a fickle bunch anyway, last season the Revie Stand were (top of their voice) singing "Diouf's a c*nt, his wife's a slag." Now they idolise him. Sad.

I also don't think either point I made is on a par or anything. His comments were daft but our "fan" should be put down. Almost felt embarrassed to be a Leeds last night.

Re his comments, it's the fact that he referred to all Leeds fans as "vile animals." I can understand his frustration but that's a very very silly thing to say.

As far as Dave Jones is concerned, I'm a vile animal.

I think you're going to have to forgive his heat of the moment poorly chosen words.

Of all the things that happened at the match his comments should not be that high on the list of things to be addressed.

I was watching some of the game on Sky and the one thing I couldn't understand is how the thug was able to get on the pitch, assault Kirkland, and then rejoin his mates in the stand without intervention from either stewards or the police.

At the very least the Leeds fans should have been kept back at the end until he was identified and arrested.

Yeah, Leeds fans have had a reputation in the past, but then so have many other teams' fans. It's a bit harsh to tar them all with the same brush though.
That the guy was able to rejoin his mates is shocking & I think that everyone in the section should have been nicked.
Isn't it called "aiding & abetting" or "harbouring a criminal"?

What also beggars belief is that Warnock sent his team over to applaud the fans. Nice one Neil

The danger of forums is sadly the same danger of certain sections of the media, a curious lack of balance where Leeds United are concerned. I'm not about to defend such chanting, it's horrible. But it's worth noting that the Sheffield Wednesday fans were chanting; We all hate Leeds scum, unsavoury songs about Neil Warnock's and Paddy Kenny's wives and some especially horrible chants about the Leeds fans who were murdered in Turkey. Odd that Dave Jones and some media coverage missed out, and continue to miss out, that aspect. Respect is due to Peter Beagrie on Sky for pointing that out after the match. You can understand Dave Jones being upset about the chants aimed at him straight after the match but he has to properly apologise - he's almost apologised. You can't let that go, he's spreading hatred and pouring fuel on the fire. You can't have a manager on TV label a whole set of fans as vile animals, it just perpetuates the nonsense. Plus he's not mentioned once the Sheffield chants, which is hypocricy of the highest order. I won't defend idiots who spoil football matches with their violence. Too much of it about sadly...

The Leeds fans spread his name over Twitter and Facebook within minutes and informed the police. The name of the 20 year old from Cheltenham, already the subject of broken banning orders, has now been arrested. Good.

5000 Leeds fans came to support their team, helping to create the highest attendance at a Championship game this season. The usual courtesy of thanking travelling fans for their support should not be derailed by the actions of a minority. Unless we really do want to tar all football fans with the same brush.

There has been quite a lot of coverage in the Sunday papers about the game and many have picked up on the chanting from the Wednesday fans.

However whatever they sang it doesn't excuse the actions of more than a handful of Leeds fans.

I really don't understand why anyone feels the need to sing these hateful songs. In the long run it will drive decent people away from attending matches.

all yorkshire sings "we all hate leeds scum", as do several manchester and north-western teams. it's part of the joke and banter. sadly some people can't leave it at that and take it very, very personally.

and sadly, every team has a handful of fans like that chap... i "met" a chap called "wednesday mick" a few months ago while on a tram in sheffield and he was a f*cking psychopath. nearly kicked the sh*t out of a dozen people on the tram (he was a big fella, in his 40s and these were mostly gobby young lads), if it wasn't for his mate calming him down

Seats ripped up and thrown towards the pitch - sounds like 1975 again. Fortunately CCTV and policing methods have drastically reduced this kind of incident and those involved on Friday night had better prepare themselves for a dawn raid in the next few days.
I hoped that this kind of thing would die out but as QB rightly says, every team still has more than a handful of idiots and hangers-on who will reappear for the the big occasions and get caught up in this kind of stupidity.
Witty banter is all part of the atmosphere at a big game but racism, sectarianism, and repetitive sick chanting (Munich/Belsen/Hillsborough etc) most definitely are not and it is up to responsible footie fans to do their bit to hemp to stamp it out.

agreed. the difference can be a fine line though, and someone like that mick i ran into would probably get wound up by even the most common chants (away fans singing "i wanna go home... i wanna go home... this place is a sh*t hole, i wanna go home" could be one example)

Being a football fan inevitably involves a certain degree of ingroup-outgroup dynamics, the "Us versus Them" mentality. Obviously there's nothing wrong with that per se and indeed to a certain extent it happens on here as well (*cough*) and it's all part of the fun.

The problem as I see it is that for some people, this can quite easily spill over into other, far less benign forms of the ingroup-outgroup dynamic, like the aforementioned racism, sectarianism, etc.

Strange that a bottle thrown at Diouf at Elland Road by a Birmingham fan hasn't been mentioned in the media. Or the widely-available footage on YouTube of Sheff Wed fans punching a QPR player.
