Apart from the odd track here and there, I thought they went downhill went Vince Clarke left.

Let's just say there are advantages with bands who stop releasing new albums in time. Not that they should stop 20 years too early either like certain ones we know, but this is really painful to listen to if you expect DM groove.

Haven't listen to it yet, but if there is no groove in it chances are in favor to not buy it. I am currently running a groove-like period

If you don't like the new album you can always turn it off and...
(Puts on shades)
Enjoy the silence.
YYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

HA!!! Sheldon's nemesis wandered into the punk-rock shop where I worked in Hollyweird many moons ago. A co-worker who was absolutely mad about him did the honors of piercing his ear that day, not realizing whose ear she'd impaled until after he'd left the shop (all those celebs look quite different in person, don'tcha know. For example, Ian Astbury turned out to be miles shorter than I am. *Sigh*). "Wow, that guy was CUTE!" "Um, yeah...that was Wil Wheaton, by the way." *Major freakout*

Same for me...but I've lost interest after Exciter and the last DM song i can listen to is, probably, MARTYR.
PS B-side All That's Mine is pretty good to my ears..

Was thinking the exact same thing. Dunno why DM have to be so overwrought ALL the time. Especially with such cliched lyrics. Their '80s stuff had a bit of camp to it, although maybe they weren't aware.

Still haven't done it from start to finish.
The single was dull as ditch water though. The B side was pretty good.
I am truly hoping it's better than the last one though.

It's definitely better than Sounds of the Universe IMO. Don't take the single as a reference it's one of the weaker songs on the album. My first impression wasn't that good but the more often I listened to it, the better it gets. However, a completely different sound than the early / eighties albums. In my view the closest comparables are Ultra and Playing the Angel. But I agree that the new Bowie album is better.

I'm getting into this now
All of their post-Wilder albums have taken a bit of patience though. I don't think melody is that high on Martin's priorities and Fletch's contribuitions are the Depeche Mode equivalent of Jeanine Pettibone's.
