Best versions of all "new" songs? * * UPDATE 3
Posted: 21 Oct 2014, 06:13
by Yggdrasil
I'm going to make the ultimate collection of (relatively) recent unreleased SoM material - strictly from the “no physical releases period.
What are your suggestions for the best possible sources, sound- and performance-wise for the ultimate compilation of all "new" SoM songs, including covers?
The final result/product will be shared with all.
(Please note that I haven't included (We Are The Same) Susanne in the list because it was an official release. Unless it’s controversial, I will include it in the final compilation, sourced from the official 256 kbps mp3).
Please suggest your favorite versions/sources as comments to this post!

* I’ve decided not to include any brief snippets or soundcheck strumming, which are sometimes listed as tracks on various trade lists. If they’re more substantial (say like Stairway To Heaven or He's Got The Whole World In His Hands), I’ll include them, but not otherwise. Suggestions are welcome!

A bit off topic; I never understand why these two are always listed as a medley (and usually one track) on the 2000-ish era bootlegs, they're quite clearly two separate songs.

An admirable task and one I am all in favour of
One I can't see on your list of covers "Silver Machine"

PS do you intend to feed them through some kind of machinery to "tart" the sound up?

Absolutely, I never even noticed there was a medley like that.
On the other hand, Comfortably Numb does always come as a medley with SKOS ...
Anyway, it's great idea and effort, Yggdrasil! ...
...
I've noticed that you omit
Good Things and
Wide Receiver... because they are very old tracks?
As to OTHER ...
there are also
Killed By Death and
Metropolis ... both within the
Supercrash Festival medley ... but when did they quote "Hells Bells" and "Passenger"?

I've always though of them as separate tracks but they were sequenced together by the Doctor - I don't think they've ever appeared in setlist apart from each other? Same for Sugar Baby Love and Sedated.

Can someone fill me in on Hells Bells and The Passenger, I've never heard of these as Sisters songs, I've not been paying attention obviously. (I'm guessing it'll turn out to be a couple of lines mumbled during a Sister Ray/Ghostrider type of thing?? And if we're going down that route you'd also have to include Cher's Gypsy's Tramps & Thieves and a load of other mumbleness I can't even identify from one particular "medley".)

Just name-wise, they seem like covers (AC/DC and Iggy Pop).
I'd also be interested in a compilation like that, by the way.

They're both from soundchecks. I've never heard but I've seen them listed, so they must be included (just like with When Spirits Fly back in the day).

Of course, will correct that as soon as I'm able (don't know how to edit my post however, can't see the option for that).

Thank you! It's just something I've always wanted myself. Preferably on vinyl, but a CD-R will have to do.
I hope some bootlegger copies the final result and releases a glorious vinyl boot (I'll gladly supply the design in exchange for a copy)

Yes, this is strictly for the post-physical releases phase.

Hells Bells and Passenger are listed as having been recorded during soundchecks, but I've yet to hear them. I missed that they had done Killed By Death and Metropolis though, would love to hear them!

Do you have the date of the soundchecks? I tried googling but found nothing.
EDIT: Found the info here:

PS the reason you can't edit your post is that there's a time-limit on edits. We had some trouble a while ago with someone making a nuisance of themselves and then covering their tacks by editing the offending posts several hours after the fact (but before any moderator/admins had seen them)
I could do the edit, copying the post from the other thread, to keep this all in one thread if you like?

The compiler of the 9 volume "Reflections" draws heavily on Hochst and Hamburg from 2003 for the older new material and that sounds OK.
Whether it's down to Eldo having an extra Locket or the Sound Engineer forgetting to put the P.A. setting on "crap" I don't know.
Maybe the compiler was German which is why he favoured these venues but they are listenable.

I figured something like that had been going on, hence the time limit.

That would be really helpful, please do! Much obliged.

Done, and I've locked the other thread. If you need any more alterations to the top post, just say so in this thread, I'll keep my eye on it.

Leeds 2003 and 05 are often acknowledged as the best quality bootlegs, no idea what tracks you'll get off them (can't remember)
other than that it comes down to generation, source and mastering - for example, there are six recordings of Leeds 2003

Are there no soundboard recordings containing any of the (increasingly old) "new" songs?
