Friday 27th February on BBC4
On June 4 1976, four young men from ruined, post-industrial Manchester went to see a Sex Pistols show at the Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall. Inspired by the gig that is now credited with igniting the Manchester music scene, they formed what was to become one of the world's most influential bands, Joy Division.
Over thirty years later, despite a tragedy that was to cut them off in their prime, they are enjoying a larger audience and more influence than ever before, with a profound legacy that resonates fiercely in today's heavily manufactured pop culture.
Featuring the unprecedented participation of all the surviving band members, this film examines the band's story through never-before-seen live performance footage, personal photos, period films and newly discovered audiotapes.

It is a great great doc. Love it.
In slightly related news...
IC's house is up for sale. ...and there is a campaign to turn it into a museum. Seems like a mighty fine idea to me.

I haven't seen that doc before, so this'll be new for me.
I think I read that Barney was trying to buy Curtis' house & turn it into a museum.
Thought it was a bit morbid really.

What's wrong with morbid?
Not sure Barney was involved - I think he was interviewed and said the same as you.
It's a campaign to buy it online.

There is already a project for a museum underway ... and, IMHO, a better one,
as it includes a cafe bar with performance space, a shop, a permanent Joy Division showcase,
plus an art gallery and workshops, and also a recording studio in the basement.
Well, that could possibly do more honour to the memory of Ian Curtis ...

Try and get hold of it on DVD, there's loads of outtakes that didn't make the final cut of the Film, although the Euro version (7 years ago
Koen advised me on here) had 30mins or so less outtakes than the UK DVD release

Its a great film, features all the essential surviving characters including the late Tony Wilson. Also recommended is the Shadowplayers doc which focuses more on Factory in general, but is a cool companion piece, though the JD one is much bigger budget.

Thanks for putting this on here Pista.
I would have missed this. See it's on Friday on BBC4 at 9pm and then later at 12.35, so I will watch the later slot.
Having first seen joy Division support Buzzcocks , I think it was 1979 at Leeds Uni , I knew this band was special.So I was lucky to have seen them live.
I would say they were the best support band ever, should have been Buzzcocks supporting , and would be if they were still around.

Rather interestingly they have just this minute said on the radio that it's a new documentary with never before seen live footage.

Sometimes its a good thing to go watch the support bands , it can pay off.
Seen a band called Invasives once from Canada supporting Hanson Brothers ( punk band not the other one ) that was Saturday the 14th April 2012 at the Brudenell in Leeds and they were bloody good live, as were the Hanson brothers.

I don't have iPlayer access here & haven't managed to find a "digital security backup" in any of the usual places.
Was it a different doc to the Grant Gee one?

There was
some footage in it I'd not seen before, so on a personal level - they were correct!
