As not much can be known about this gig I was really happy to find this pic on Propaganda Magazine's site.
It was new to me.

The Sisters Of Mercy play Danceteria in New York City on Friday April 13th 1984.

Great picture, thanks!

But when did the Sisters start using lots of smoke on stage, really? In the sleeve note to SGWBM :von: writes something about "..where you could find, or more probably lose, yourself in smoke.." but I haven't really seen much smoke in videos pre...'85 at least? :?

IIRC the smoke started getting more voluminous during 84.
I remember the Top Rank show being pretty smokey.
But in 85 they found someone who could light it properly.
I don't really think there was necessarily more smoke in 85 per se, but the way it was lit gave the impression of a perpetual fog with 4 silhouettes in it.

Awesome photo. :notworthy:

My own recollection is of an interview where Von remarks on one of the US '84 shows - may even have been this one - as being the first where they used smoke. It's certainly not in evidence on any of the videos we have of 83 and earlier.

Either way, nice to see such a good photo from this period.

Those were the days :D :notworthy:

Wasn't it a case of a dry-ice machine gone mad that first smoked the hell out of them/the stage somewhere in late 83/early 84? And they quite liked the effect and just continued doing it on purpose each and every single night after that...
Think I read that somewhere long ago, but anyway that's the story I'm sticking to 8)

Stuttart '84 is quite smoky for sure.

York Racecourse has smoke but it's also a daylight open-air show which is an odd mix.

Chicago (1st April) has no smoke so it happened after then.

Really, this one from where the picture is? But there's a minimum of smoke there, not what I mean by smokey gig....Stuttgart ´84, I'll buy that anytime, almost more than nowadays

Yup, New York '84, Danceteria. Von says they were 'given' smoke, so I'd be surprised if the venue'd been bold enough to blot them out of sight with that token haze.

Meanwhile, the Stuttgart show was 7 months later. Enough time for the band to grow fond to the smoke and properly roadtest it. This suggests NY had smoke, whereas Stuttgart was smoking.
