Makes me rather sad that "Goths" are still today labelled "Weird" .. If you look different to the norm (whatever norm means)

I find that most of these people are very caring, sensitive and most are animal lovers! Just read a thread that the late Chris Sheehan had an animal sanctuary in Spain!

Does it still happen? I have to admit, I haven't really noticed (personally) being seen as weird. Maybe I'm numb to it after so many years. Or maybe my aversion to being around people allows me to not see it.

I think it depends where you live. I live near Stratford upon Avon and to dress as a goth is not the norm. I'm not a goth

But Goths are weird...that's the whole point.

It does n't stop them being caring, sensitive, animal lovers either....

Some are right twats as well...just like most segments of society.

I must say, I don't encounter many (identifiable) goths where I am in Hungary.
I recently met a girl who has live around the corner for years apparently who freaked out when I turned up at my local with a Pronography t shirt on.
What was even more of a mind blower, she's English!
& people think she's weird purely because she's an English person in Hungary.

There's goths and there's goths though.

There's the type who are into the music first and foremost, who maybe, somewhere along the line, get drawn into wearing all black, having long hair, tattoos and piercings etc.

And then there's the type who go to Whitby dressed as a f*cking pirate and wouldn't know the Sisters from the Suez Canal.

i have never considered myself a goth until fairly recently (probably about the same time as i joined HL actually.)
i was brought up by bikers, so i already wore mostly black, had long hair, listened to rock and metal, and had an attitude that said if you dont like it then you can f**k off. getting into the sisters and the cramps caused a sufficient paradigm shift (make-up, crimped hair, winkle-pickers) to p*ss off my "broad-minded" biker parents and cast me heartily into straight society's "weirdo" bracket; but i didnt consider myself a goth.
i liked most goth/music bands of the era and still do (lthough i couldnt stomach certain acts like sex gang children and valor-era christian death- roz wiliams band being an altogether different story) and fancied goth chicks so this was enough to make goth clubs preferable to tedious biker/rock nights... at which point i came into contact with "the scene" and discovered what a pretentious bunch of cunts most "goths" were (IMO) and though they probably thought that of me and my mates as well (and they were right) to have called myself a goth would have to been associating myself with people we weren't. so still not a goth.
funnily enough most of those sort turned out to have been on a "long-weekend" ( "weekend goths" being -well, weekend goths!!) and slowly faded from the scene. this left the first type of goth Mark described above, whom i dont mind being associated with.
so, still not a goth (i have NEVER had black hair for starts) but if i have to label myself to satisfy someone else's need for pigeon-holes, i'm more a goth than anything else. and i doubt there's much chance of this being misinterpreted as meaning i'm one of the "we're REAL vampires and drink each others blood and sleep in coffins" brigade. they may call themselves goths but theyre not - theyre fuck-wits.

Brought up on Merseyside on a rounded diet of Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin and Hawkwind with a slice of Echo or Julian Cope for afters. The love of motorbikes helped and my dress sense was already veering towards black n leather n Paisley n bangles.

A move to Leeds in 1982 put me in Springfield Mount three doors away from the Faversham pool table and a certain juke box that played Cat People and Alice incessantly. The hair stayed long and the clothes didn't change much.

The hair is now a shadow of its former glory, but I can still shake my tail feather to decent rock n roll tunes.

Never admitted being a g*th though, but all us oldies do that don't we!

The long weekend types I met with elitist Metal fans, Punks etc. The sort of elitist that told me I cant love metal if I went to see Kraftwerk or bought Ultravox or Crass LP's, I tended to avoid and tell them to F off. I never claimed to be x or y, and unlike those that said you can't be I still see bands, they live the "normal life" with little outside interests. I avoided labels, possibly as I liked to dress differently all the time, one min a suit the next a gold and silver embroidered coat and what have you and a load of slap . I liked most of the Gothic types I met though, they seemed to be just a bit more open about their music than the ardent metal heads or punks. The few I meet at gigs now are the ones who gave no thought to its not X and just listened to what ever they wanted. Now I must do me roots.
