Been listening to the live versions of the newer songs a lot lately and I noticed the verse "It’s all electric/ There were sparks and then there weren’t/ You took the bridge and it is burnt" appears in both But Genevieve and Don't Drive On Ice. At first, I thought this was just an error- A live slip up, but after listening to multiple shows- it is in both songs. A place holder? Inconsequential as they'll never release studio versions? Apologies if this has been discussed before.

I noticed this too.

I've always thought But Genevieve sounded unfinished - there are long sections with no vocals that aren't interesting enough to be intended as instrumentals, so it seems clear something is meant to fill the gap.

I've also heard at least one version where Eldritch mumbles something about "reasons" and "seasons" in one of these sections.

I think it is very intentional, and a fine example of lyrics that can take on different meanings depending on the context. The two songs are also somewhat alike musically, so this creates a red thread to follow on the forthcoming album

My impression is that Genevieve is just a semi-structured jam session, lyrics vary widely from gig to gig. Other bits and pieces have been in there. Von just sings whatever tf he wants, and like that snippet from DDOI. There isn't a canonical version.

Would be cool if it canonically appeared in both songs- but with one in German.

I think we pointed out how similar they are a while back and we ended up suggesting a medley to get rid of Detonation Boulevard.

I suspect it’s Genevieve for whom the narrator called a car in I Will Call You. He then tells her “it’s time”, before tampering with the brakes in the truck she’s driving, causing the long slow carambolage. He’d thought about the jackknife but concluded drowning more fitting. Tying her body to the rack was also considered.

It’s unclear what poor Genevieve did to deserve this. Perhaps she represents politicians alluded to in Caligula or On The Beach, or perhaps she represents popular culture that was dissected in “Show Me” .

He returns to his flat where he waits for the “blues and twos” to arrive to arrest him and probably indulge in some police brutality in doing so. After pulling off the greatest prison break in history he declares that he’s “on fire” before disappearing into the sunset on a Viking rowing boat.

It all fits with the album title “Left on venom and revenge”.

Or something like that

DJW, good narrative. It’s like telling a story across several songs. Clever!
