Glastonbury Vs Goth

(I know,, we're not Goths)

Watching Glastonbury coverage it occurs to me that with the obvious exception of goth adjacent The Cure I can't recall any goth acts appearing there over the years.

As quite a significant and long lasting part of alternative culture this seems strange.

Anytime got any thoughts or insights on this?

Do New Model Army count? Pretty sure they played on the years I went, 1999 or 2002, more likely 99 but dunno, I didn't see them.

I believe NMA actually played (or will play) this year. All About Eve have played, do they count?

If you're having The Levellers than I'm having Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine who actually headlined the festival in 1992.

The Levellers did in 1993 I believe. Playing to the biggest crowd ever at Glasto.

Garbage headlined the second stage in 2002. Only Happy When It Rains? Definitely goth. Great gig :notworthy:

He signed me up to his bl00dy substack thingy for some reason. I have never had so much spam email from one person in my life.
I was getting upwards of 6 or 7 emails a day from him

I believe that the most important criteria is that you vehemently deny that you are in fact Goth.

Not music for sure. I'll always maintain there is no such thing as goth music. Rather music that goths gravitate towards

Good shout! I've often observed when asked that if a DJ plays it in a goth club, and goths dance to it, and own copies of it, then it's a duck. Sorry, I mean goth.
I believe that the most important criteria is that you vehemently deny that you are in fact Goth.
Not sure where that would leave us if I asked Carly Rae Jepsen, Bob Marley or the Beach Boys that question!

exactly this. Second third & following generations of 'goth' music has become more & more formulaic and sort of countrer-defined the bands that came first, but it was the scene that adopted its bands not the music that created the scene. The Sisters became a goth band because we all loved/love them. same for Fat Bob, Siouxsie and the Joyless Divs. i wont include Borehaus becasue they werent even a band they were wank...i mean art.
