I knew it was a rolling stones song, but for some reason it never really sounded hippie to me. Well, i've never been a stones fan so i think i'm excused

it was played at a festival called altamont were someone in the crowd died during its performance. i think that was the last time the stones played it for years - it became a bit of a "thing" for them.

also, altamont was a "hippie" festival. i think...

the song's lyrics also have hippie overtones.

not quite,

the Hells Angels were acting as security for the stones. everybody thought this was a bad idea to start with.

They started fighting with the crowd, who were mainly loved up hippies. The stones were delayed in comming on stage. There is a cool vidio of the whole gig knocking around.

Anyway the significance was it was a black guy who was stabbed, the stones didn't even know till after.

Many say that was the end of flower power

And no, I don't think the sisters started in the sixties, I believe Eldo may have been breaking the habit of a lifetime and speaking metaphorically

We turned it around. Altamont's very important. If there's a part of history where rock music stopped for a second and we began. If there's a point were the seeds of what we do were sown, it's probably Altamont, cus it encapsulated everything wonderful at the time. The good things and the bad things, and a lot of both. It's when the trip turned sour and it's when the best music was.
