I knew it was a rolling stones song, but for some reason it never really sounded hippie to me. Well, i've never been a stones fan so i think i'm excused

it was played at a festival called altamont were someone in the crowd died during its performance. i think that was the last time the stones played it for years - it became a bit of a "thing" for them.

also, altamont was a "hippie" festival. i think...

the song's lyrics also have hippie overtones.

Gimme Shelter

By Jagger/Richards

Oh, a storm is threat'ning
My very life today.
If I don't get some shelter
Oh yeah, I'm gonna fade away.

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away.
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away.

Ooh, see the fire sweepin'
Our very street today.
Burns like a red coal carpet
Mad bull lost its way.

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away.
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away.

The floods is threat'ning
My very life today.
Gimme, gimme shelter
Or I'm gonna fade away.

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
I tell you love, sister, it's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
Kiss away, kiss away

By Eldritch

Oh, see the storm is threatening
My very life today
If I don't get some shelter
Yeah, I'm gonna fade away

War, children
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
[repeat]
Yeah

Oh, see the fire is sweeping
Down through the streets today
Burning like a bright red carpet
Another fool who lost the way

Rape. Murder.
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
[repeat]
Yeah

[repeat verse one]

Love, sisters
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
Love, sisters
It's just a shot away
Shot away
Shot away

War, children
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
War, children
It's just a kiss away
Kiss away
Kiss away

Rape. Murder.
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
Rape. Murder.
It's just a kiss away
Kiss away
Kiss away

[repeat previous three x2]

[repeat love chorus]

War, children
It's just a kiss away
Kiss away
Kiss away

Forget he content, neither are totally right, but hopefully you can see what I'm getting at

not quite,

the Hells Angels were acting as security for the stones. everybody thought this was a bad idea to start with.

They started fighting with the crowd, who were mainly loved up hippies. The stones were delayed in comming on stage. There is a cool vidio of the whole gig knocking around.

Anyway the significance was it was a black guy who was stabbed, the stones didn't even know till after.

Many say that was the end of flower power

I think Eldritch has said something along the lines of "Altamont speedway is the moment that rock and roll stopped for a minute, and the moment the sisters started, that's why gimme shelter is an important song for us..." Crappily quoted, but hey that's my job...It's on some Canadian radio interview from around 84; I can dig it out if anyone's bothered. And no, I don't think the sisters started in the sixties, I believe Eldo may have been breaking the habit of a lifetime and speaking metaphorically  :von:

INT: I know I have to get going, she's telling me to get running. There's just one thing I want to know, there's another quote here I took from your press release. "The Sisters writhe in the legends of Altamont..." well they meant Altamont as in Altamont Speedway the Rolling Stones, when they played early seventies San Francisco, Altamont Speedway right?

AE: One of the reasons Gimme Shelter is so important. We changed the words around in Gimme Shelter. The original was about how love's just a kiss away and war is just a shot away. We turned it around. Altamont's very important. If there's a part of history where rock music stopped for a second and we began. If there's a point were the seeds of what we do were sown, it's probably Altamont, cus it encapsulated everything wonderful at the time. The good things and the bad things, and a lot of both. It's when the trip turned sour and it's when the best music was.

INT: It was slightly dangerous at that time. Really, for a few minutes there.

AE: For one guy especially. But it encapsulates so much, Altamont.
