Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy back on the wireless

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy is set to return to the medium from which it was first launched, the BBC confirmed this morning.
Hmm, I've had that information for a few days. Might as well add the broadcast dates (which knowing the BBC will change nearer broadcast date)

Life, The Universe & Everything
6 episodes, Radio 4, 6.30pm, 17.2.04-23.3.04

So Long & Thanks For All The Fish
4 episodes, Radio 4, 6.30pm, 14.9.04-5.10.04

Mostly Harmless
4 episodes, Radio 4, 6.30pm, 12.10.04-2.11.04

Douglas Adams will be playing the part of Agrajag, using audio from an audio book he made. Apparently he always wanted to play the part, and now he will.

Great stuff, looking forward to hearing them on the "wireless" old bean.

Why was I not informed ? ;-)

I have been a major HitchHikers fan since 1981 (showing my age I guess!)

I will purchase a DAB radio thingy ASAP!

Does anyone know where I sign up to hear of "Broadcast Dates" first hand?

In case anyone's forgotten, we *should* be 5 episodes into "Life, The Universe & Everything" by now.

But we're not.

It should have been splashed all over the front page of the Radio Times and trailed on the radio for weeks.

But it wasn't.

All we got from the BBC was a conspiracy of silence.

Rather odd really.

Finally last week a news page on the BBC site said it'd been delayed indefinitely.

I wonder why?

Well, reading between the lines here's what's happened. Last year BBC7 (or whatever the one is that plays the old shows) wanted to repeat the original series but found it no longer held the rights! Meanwhile, before Douglas Adams' death he was in negotiations with the umpteenth film company to make the film. Guess who it was? Which company would be the worst possible choice to make a movie of HHGTTG? f****** Disney! If you guessed right give yourself 10 points!

Now, after Douglas' death those ***** have a free reign over the film. It's no longer a bypass, but a "hypergalactic freeway". They're no longer digital watches but cellphones. Marvin looks really stupid. A tiny cute robot with a HUGE head. Methinks some twit misunderstood "brain the size of a planet". The casting of the main characters is appalling. If they change just one of the classic lines (and they will), the film's gonna be sh!te (and it will be).

So it's Disney, with it's damn exclusivity contract who's preventing the BBC from broadcasting the new radio series. The film's gonna be a heap of steaming crud and the radio series will be great, but now we'll not get to hear it.

Although maybe the exclusivity contract only applies to broadcasts and maybe they'll be able to release it on cd. Or maybe we'll have to wait a few years. Who knows.

The following "Statement" was posted on BBC.co.uk/cult on the 3rd March 2004 - I meant to post it sooner but I overlooked it - sorry!

"Problems hit the return of The Hitchhiker's Guide to radio.

Despite a behind-the-scenes feature in the latest issue of SFX magazine, further dramatisations of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy will not be broadcast on Radio 4 in the near future.

We spoke to Radio 4 publicity to find out the reason for the delay, who told us there were 'rights issues' holding up the broadcast. Here's the quote:

"Whilst we are extremely keen to see Hitchhiker return to Radio 4, there are unfortunately some rights issues that remain to be resolved and until they are, we will not be able to release any details, including transmission dates."

Production of the film version is continuing apace, however. Martin Freeman (The Office) will play Arthur Dent, with Bill Nighy as Slartibartfarst and Mos Def as Ford Prefect."
