Heard Joy Division's 24 Hours on the radio today just as I was 'gettin ma heid the gither'.
Not a good start to a miserable day, thank Gawd it wasn't Monday!
Can anyone (dead)beat that?
regards
Blast

Torch, apparently.
Myself I'd go for Fleetwood Mac's "Over & Over" or Jacques Brel's "My Death".

'amazing' is not depressing

"Stolen and stealing" by Crime and The City Solution always makes me sad no matter how happy I am when I put the record on...

Pink and Velvet by Berlin. Complete with Dave Gilmour guitar solo, so it also has the Floydian stamp of depression on it.
And Torch really is depressing.

For purely personal reasons, I suppose, and a decidedly un-goff for the most part (thank fook) selection...
"Winter In July": by Bomb The Bass
"Listen": Tears For Fears
"The Eternal"/"Decades": Joy Division
"Poppies": Teardrop Explodes
"Doubts Even Here": New Order
Last two tracks off the Neph's Elyzium
"Shine On You Crazy Diamond"/"Wish You Were Here"/"Another Brick in the wall Pt 2": Pink Floyd
All of these guaranteed to get Lars moist-eyed and down at some point or other.
Oh, there are so many more, sentimental fool that I am...But these'll do in the 'Downer' stakes for now...
And, yeah, owt by bleedin' Pop Idol/Fame Academy 'stars' etc etc - just plain depressing. Which is much, MUCH worse...

I'd forgotten about Listen, very moving.
I'd also like to add One of My Turns and Don't Leave Me Now by Pink Floyd.

I agree with Lars' selection of 'The eternal'. Moves me every time.

I'd steer well clear of Patsy Cline then, my friend. Mrs T loves it but that 'my man's run of with my best mate but I still love him' stuff depresses the hell out of me. And cheer up. We're still here.

A couple that spring to mind are:
The Verve - History (In every kiss, you understand that living is for other men)
TSOM - Bury Me Deep - gets me every time

Ye Gods, the man's gotta point!!
This used to REALLY get to me when it first came out (and, ahem, now, as it happens...It doesn't actually take that much to get my lachrymal glands in full flow [oo-er] I've just learned self control...) My god how could I forget this one???? (seriously!)...
Depressing song for a depressing 'cartoon'....they don't mek 'em like thi used ter...

various bits of lyrics from The The's Soul Mining - esp. Uncertain Smile.
I wrote an A Level question answer about them...

Good call though E.S! An almost-forgotten gem, surely?!?
