These guys seem to be seriously undervalued. Stuck at the back. Not allowed to move. Only four strings. No effects pedals. Come on! Rise and reverberate. Trip that lead over.

Derek Forbes (ex Simple Minds) - they used to write songs around his bass lines.
Simon Gallup - The Cure

Off the top of my head, in no particular order:
Gary Thain - very ex bass player of Uriah Heep
John Paul Jones - Zeppelin
Mark King - Level 42 (slapping while Flea was in short pants)
Jimmy Lea - Slade (wrote most of their music as well)
Bruce Foxton - The Jam (shame about the haircut)
Bill Wyman - The Stones (saving his energy for the post-gig party)
