As there's been polls about favourite versions of almost all songs that exist in multiple versions, I thought I'd do one about Colours. Forgive me if this has been done before, but I've searched and found nowt

Ah but which do you prefer?

Hoooh, gimme gimme James Ray's vocals baby. The Gift version of the song is just better overall, with a more claustrophic atmosphere, and Ray's voice suits it more. The TC B-side version sounds too much like it was knocked out in a hurry.

Yep. Agreed. Can't see why he did it at all, other than to provide a quick and easy b-side. Speaking of which, here's an interesting one: 'The Sisters b-sides were fantastic up until 1985, and completely duff afterwards'. Discuss.

James Ray
MrChris: Start a proper thread when mentioning something like that... I agree with it in part.

The newer version of Colours sounds to me like its been lifted from John Carpenters The Thing, but thats okay by me, great film, great record.

But it did give more exposure to a truly great song!
"you reap what you sow
put your face to the ground
here come the marching men, your colours wrapped around"

Definitely not until after 1988!
You forgot Long Train and Emma!

not completely duff - Emma is a classic and Long Train is great. You Could Be The One is very tongue in cheek, but still a good rawk track IMHO and not to be taken too seriously!
The live version of Ribbons on the B side of the WYDSM single is stunning!
And I liked Alice 1993.

One problem with the James Ray Colours is that it sounds like "here come the mooching men", or "mushing men" or "pushing men" or something.

Well I don't like either, I think they should be filed along with Home Of The Hitmen, Watch and Damage... I'll get me coat...

James Ray's vocal is the version on "Gift"
Von's vocal is the B-side on "This Corrosion"

I like Von's vocals better. But this song doesn't have much vocals unfortunately

Mr Ray's version...you sure can't tell he's a Geordie.....
Beside which I prefer his voice anyway....
Now I'll get me coat....

I loved Auf Weidersen Pet, does that count? Jimmy Nail's vocal outings I could pass on tho.

Just out of curiosity, did most people who cast a vote pick the version which he or she first heard? For example, if you heard Colours first on Floodland, did that version become your measuring stick for the track?
