Best cover version by the sisters

Yep, I know it will have been done before, and yep, I know I'm a newbie... but hey! You think i care?

We all know that the sisters are the best cover band ever - that's a given. Written in stone. 100% objective fact. But what do you think are their best covers and what are their worst?

I can't be assed to trawl thru to list every cover they've done; and I'm sure there's some I haven't heard, but here's some to ponder on:

Emma (Hot Choccy)
Jolene (country queen dolly "two dollups please" parton)
Gimme Shelter (rolling stones)
Stairway To Heaven (Led Zep)
Ghostrider (Hawkwind)
Sister Ray (Lou Reed?)
Louie Louie (who's that by? don't even know how to spell it)
Knocking On Heaven's Door (Bob Dylan)
Sugar Baby Love (The Rubettes)
Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd)
Confide In Me (Kylie Minogue)
Gimme Gimme Gimme A Man After Mignight (Abba)
Teachers (Leonard Cohen)

Is War On Drugs a cover too?

Anyways, mine would out of be Emma, Jolene, Teachers, Comfortably Numb and Sugar Baby Love.... I'll have to ponder which one wins top spot.

Sisters' cover version are a triumph in showing that style can of more import than content - and usually is when it comes to music.

Best IMHO:

Comfortably Numb
Emma
Gimme Shelter

Worst IMHO: Bei Mer Du Schon

btw, Ghostrider wasn't written by Hawkwind mate. I think you're thinking of Silver Machine (performed twice in the summer of 1993).

Yeah - that's the one! Who was Ghostrider by - or was it not a cover? And who was whatever-that-german-means by?

Ghostrider - Suicide
Bei Mer Du Schon - Andrews Sisters (performed by Andrew's Sisters)

you also left out sugar baby love, i wanna be sedated, capricorn and i didn't know i love ('til i saw you rock 'n' roll).

Ghostrider is by Suicide originally. And as every Sisters fan should know, Alan Vega of Suicide went on to be a member of the Sisterhood.

BTW, my choices for best 3 agree with Scardwell's (spooky!)

"Bei mir bist du schön". "Louie, Louie" is by The Kingsmen and "Sister Ray" by Velvet Underground. "War on Drugs" is not a cover.

I'm kinda fond of the two from SF 1998. Great sound. One of them has some yank chick blabbing on in the background though.

Don't forget Purple Haze and Hey Joe. Very groovy versions.

As for the best, I'd go with Scardwells list but in the opposite order.

Don't forget 1969

Surprisingly enough, I never think of Emma or Gimme Shelter as covers as they were part of the furniture in the early days. Still partial to Sugar Baby Love but Adam and Chris need to improve on their 'wap wap woo, showaddy, bop showaddys ...' Guess who remembers singing along to the original.

B'ham '92. The Sister Ray '98 version is excellent too.

No shame there laddie. Plenty of us were filling in on bop showaddy duty.

Emma
Gimme Shelter
Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Comfortably Numb
Teachers

The old ones were the best. Well, the old ones plus Numb, anyway. Otherwise, they don't make them like they used to. Confide in Me and Sugar Baby Love are okay, but only for novelty value, not for the long haul. A bit like Gimme Gimme Gimme. And even Stairway. However, I'd pay 27 pence to see them doing Kashmir. Or maybe more.

I should have included "Comfortably Numb". I think that when they played it at the NEC in '92, I was the only one in my section of the crowd who got the joke.

Emma because of the lyrics. It's a very powerful song.

As for you Jolene lovers...I am just going to have to repeat myself. It sucks.

Mr. Chris, did you ever listen to the version of Jolene I sent you? Can you say it's good by any stretch of the imagination?

Good lord, what next, Von in boot cut levi's, cowboy boots and hat, and bolo tie?

LMAO... I think I might pay money to see Von like that!!!

I know the original because I downloaded it after liking the sisters version so much - but when was it released? I'm guessing it's an early seventees track?

I think it's great that the sisters always do these covers that are the last thing you'd expect a band like them to do... I can't think of many other bands that do that kind of thing - Travis' live cover of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" and Ciccone (sonic) Youth's versions of Madonna's "Into The Groove" and "Burnin' Up" spring to mind - but not a lot else. Anyone got any more wierd one's like that?

1. Gimme Shelter :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
2. Jolene :notworthy: :notworthy:
3. Confide In Me :notworthy:

and so on and so one 8)

Emma is the last in this list - slow dramatic goth anthem as it is.
Of course, not a bad song, Sisters havn't done any bad song yet.

Wake version of Knocking On Heavean's Door for Hussey's 'restrained' yet excellent guitar solo.

And Hey! AC, Stairway To Fragment would be a better title. They also attempted Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water, soundchecks all, as far as I ken.

Andrew has shouted also "Always Look On The Brigth Side Of Life", "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" and "Walking The Dog" on the stage :)
