Heartland

Which Heartlanders actually live in Leeds? are you neighbors, or do you live on opposite sides of the city? Are you constantly meeting up to get pissed/moan about the Sisters/talk about cats, or do you have no contact with each other in the real world?

And just why DID Leeds become the world's goth mecca? I've visited the place a few times, and my 'presh is that it's just another vaguely depressing Northern city, no gloomier than Bradford or Liverpool or Manchester.

Just what attracted you all to the place?

What attracted me (a Manc) to Leeds? The Poly offered me a place in 88, it was close enough to head home once a month with bags of washing, and The Sisters came from there, so it had to have something going for it.

Depressing? Compared to Amsterdam, maybe.

Two relevant quotes come to mind:

Von- some article or other- 'Leeds is the speed capital of the north' which may or may not be relevant.

Also in some other article it said, 'If you were to lay all the goths in Leeds end to end the West Yorkshire police steamroller would have a field day.'

came to leeds in 98 - finished my course at sheffield uni and just happened upon a job in leeds. half-knew the city from the early 90s when i used to here clubbing now and again (for the decent goth clubs), and knew it was improving and getting safer and cleaner, so thought what the hey! why not!

i live about 5 minutes down the road from lars, who actually hails from leeds.

other than that, i have met a few people here before pre-heartland but most of the rest of you i have met as a result of this 'ere place.

i know i few leeds-folk here are mates in real life and meet up regularly anyways, but most of us do have a habit of getting together for gigs and at the only decent goth night left in leeds

Sometimes I surprise myself Quiffy. I've no idea where this stuff comes from - blatant sarcastic cynicism usually, but it always happens.

A long time ago at a hospital near Killingbeck Asda (here we go again), we had a German junior anaesthetist. Now not only was this bloke a complete tit, but worryingly he knew zip about anaesthesia. I surmised that his dad must've been Head Of Cardiothoracic Dept in Munich. Turns out his dad was Head of Anaesthesia in Munich.

Pudsey Asda - because I assume his Leeds home is / was near there.

The cul-de-sac bit came from the Brookside-esque vision I had of us all living next door to each other. Yoinks.

I came to Leeds Uni in 1990. Like Dave said,

What is the 'only decent goth night left in Leeds'?

Maybe I haven't goven the city a fair chance - I'll have to spend a long weekend there and really get a feel for the place (my previous visits have all been 'shopping trips' or to go to a specific Sisters gig)

Uncanny, me too. How many years did you last? One year of Software Engineering was enough for me. The daily walk from Meanwood to Becketts Park quickly became a weekly walk.

Other than at the Blank Canvas gig, I've never met any Heartlanders either, though intend to change that asap.

I used to visit a friend at Leeds when we were at Uni (I came down from Durham every now and then), more in homage to the Sisters than anything. We went to the funny goth corset shops, which was nice, we went to the goth disco at the student union, which was terrible, and we bought some of the huge number of bootlegs on sale in the many dinky record shops, which was expensive. This was about 8 years ago. Oooh, it all comes back. Mohicans in Morrisons, and all that. Can you still buy boots that easily?

A year of Chemistry. Well I say a year, technically I wasn't booted until Easter of my second year, but I'd stopped going to any lectures or anything after about a term of the first year!

I think the best night out in Leeds has got to be the Wendy House (which was Saturday just gone as it happens)

The DJ even played This Corrosion at the very end to a packed dancefloor... ahh.

I came to Leeds cos the University was supposed to have one of the best French departments in the country. Turned out to be true. I soon found out that, while I’d had no problem being top of the class at home, being top of a class full of people who were all used to being top of the class was too much like hard work.

As for the Goth Mecca, I imagine Marc Almond, The Sisters and The Mutton had something to do with that. And the ghost of Peter Sutcliffe seemed to lurk round every corner in the early 80s.

And I've never quite figured out the speed thing. I always thought mogadon would have been more appropriate.
