If this has been discussed on here before tell me to go forth ...
If not for the uninitiated ..
I only heard "Wide reciever" for the first time a few months ago and still can't decide if it is or it isn't
I like to add that I didn't know the controversy surrounding it until I contacted the chap who'd sent it to me and asked him on which 'b' side i could find it on and he told me the story that it wasn't eldritch .
so it fooled me ..not difficult according to my husband!!!
but what do you all think????

The Sisters have a song called wide reciever? I didn't know it.

Not sure 'bout wide receiver, but does anybody know about the God Squad Demos ??:

The three tracks I have are

Floored, Keep the Faith and Beans

A sort of drum & base ??: dancy mix of floorshow and phantom

Yes, and i believe I have it here somewhere. Don't remember if on tape or CD...

A very strange song indeed... history practically unknown, not a B-side of any single I know, and indeed, the vocals are, IMHO, not by Eldo. Will post info when I find it.

As to it being a fake or not....

In a Swedish interview back in 98 andrew says that he doesn t remember the song wide reciever at all. the rumor mill has it that it isn t sisters at all perforning the song, instead a person who is very good inpersonating andrews voice.

Well it can't have been mockeldritch cos he doesn't know the words

I remember someone told me it wasn't the Sisters, it was their road-crew for that time being, let's say mid-1984 who recorded the song.
Maybe it's Gary, Wayne and Craig doing that song with another singer?!

didnt quiff say that gary said it was a sisters song. A song with lyrics that Andrew hadnt quite thought out ater coming home from a football game or sumthing?

Once I read an interview with Hussey, asked him about 'Wide Receiver' and he remembered that there was a song AE planned for the second Sisters album with this title.
Hussey said that Andrew worked out all of the drum programmings for the entire 2nd album and he had got the running order also before the recording process...

a) I believe it's eldo singing...doesn't sound much like him on official relaese but he sounded like that often on demo's in that period
b)I think the song sucks by sisters standards
c)I thought the story was like this: song was planned for future release, but the tapes were stolen....von didn't want to mmake the effort again thinking the song would make it's way fast to the bootleggers, which it did....
d)it is found on *drum rolls * ...the bootleg with the totally unewxpected title *more drum rolls* ...

its real.

i mentioned it to gary a while ago and he was quite surprised it had ever "got out"

he told me that one day just after they had got back from their first U.S. tour (84-ish then?) eldritch came to rehearsals one day with a tune he had been working on.

he said that at the time von had been learning to play guitar and had gotten quite into "harmonics" and that this tune he played them had awful pseudo-fairground guitar riff which was slightly out of tune, and half-finished american football lyrics (it was von's latest fascination at the time).

he said it was a dreadful dirge.

gary said that the only bit of the lyrics he could were remember were "some rubbish about wide receivers, something about being 'over the line and too far forward', and some incredibly forced rhyme with 'receiver' and 'deceiver her'"

so in short, its real, its from circa 1984 and its eldritch all on his lonesome, none of the rest of the band had a hand in it (seems they all but laughed it out of the studio...)

so there you go

Well, I like it. It's very evocative and desolate. If Left on m*****n and Revenge had this and Torch on it, for me that sounds like a good start. Cutting out the Hussey rubbish, that is. The Sisters of Mercy Unplugged, what a thought.

I think it's a dreadful dirge, possibly the worst thing I've heard to fall under the TSOM banner

Isn't this just typical of the Sisters? even a rough, unfinished song inspires such a huge difference of opinions.

it's one of the reasons why I'll always love the band. they don't record good songs, or bad songs; just debatable songs... if that makes any sense.

yes but in this case I'd think anyone who falls for it just does because it's one of the last sisters songs to discover, since it's not that widely available....I liked it too the first two times or something, afterwards it just got boring, because even if you like anything the sistere ever put out for the rest, it still doesn't mean you should view some trash differently than, well, trash....
