Does anyone else think that Dominion/Mother Russia goes on too long?

Specifically, I mean after the first two verses, the sexy sax solo and the third singing of the chorus, I think it's a mistake to repeat the first verse and (partially) the chorus.

Just to make it clearer:

1st verse

chorus

2nd verse

chorus

sax solo

chorus

DOMINION SHOULD STOP HERE

1st verse again

partial chorus


I just think this drags out a fab song a bit too long, unnecessarily delaying the ace bit about lighthouse keepers in Berlin deserts turning guns to chrome, or something.

I don't think it goes on too long. Dominion on its own is fine, and Mother Russia changes the venture completely, so it's not repetitive at all. The structure of the song is quite similar to Under the Gun - fairly conventional song structure, followed by a freeflowing political rant. And damned fine poetry it is too.

I have to admit to being a big saxophone fan. Dick Parry's stuff on Dark Side Of The Moon is fandabidosi. They became very fashionable after Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street, I seem to recall.

Actually, I know damn well it wasn't, but that was the legend going round at the time IIRC.

Equally bizarrely, I remember hearing a similar story about Bruce Forsyth playing the bass on Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side'

Too long? Well, I was recently on another forum, asking if there were any Sisters fans about. Several replied in the affirmative, including one guy who said he DJs at goth clubs. He said he also thought Sisters songs were too long.

He also expressed dismay at 'Temple of Love' being played to death in the clubs.

I don't mind saxophone - it's a soulful sound. And sometimes it can be really uplifting when a good sax player really lets rip with a solo. (But only sometimes!)

Now, as for too-long-songs, what about the ending of Heartland?!? Too much repetition is a classic symptom of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, you know.

Yeah, but who decides what's "too much repetition"? i once had a chat about this kind of a thing with a psychiatrist and she admitted that there is no objective way of deciding such things in psychiatry, and deviation from the norm is a bad criteria to begin with, let alone if you have to start defining how much deviation is cause for alarm. In the field of psychology, thus, practitioners need to be creative and intuitive and one can't conclude too much from simplifications offered in textbooks and popularised versions. She also concluded i'm not in any serious need of therapy, though, so...

As for the topic, i've no complaints about the length of any Sisters song. i suppose that people who complain about lengths have some other reasons for listening to them than i.

What is it with us dwellers in the Weeg and Neverland (a fragment)? This one goes all the way back to Planet's Place & Grille, uhm ah right Bawbag?

At gigs, there's several long songs that are too long. Dominion and This Corrosion being two. I'd rather they play the short version rather than play the long version at the expense of fitting one less song into the set.

Dominion is not too long, it is fantastic. I don't normally like sax solos but on Dominion it almost sounds like some kind of ethnic eastern intrument. Very nice.
