I find myself strangely drawn to the Masters coverage on BBC. Do I have to wait until it's over before taking part in the forum again ?
And why is no-one shouting 'you da man' or 'get in the hole, ball'

There's nothing wrong with golf as such, but I've never understood it's appeal as a spectator sport. Kinda like darts, and snooker...
Irrelevant, I know, but thinking about golf brings up warm memories of my whippersnaper days when I'd earn extra pocket money by creeping round golf courses (hiding behind bushes etc.) and nicking people's balls off them, then selling them to me local sports shop, who apparently had a thriving trade in second-hand golf balls.
Happy days...
Oh, and Wintermute- what's your avatar of?

@ Wintermute:
You and Mr. BP. It was going to be replayed last nite and I had to ask "Are going to watch it again???? If you are I'm going upstairs."
It was touching tho to see Arnold Palmer in his 50th Masters.

At least you can see the balls in snooker and you've got to admire darts players for making a living out of spending all day in a pub without ever having to pull a pint.

I did know the quote, but couldn't recall the author, I thought it was Thurber or Wodehouse, the above set me straight.

He is the guy who won this year's Masters.

Other sports? Rugby League, every time.
And this year sees Basildon's Essex Eels play in the National League 3 for the first time. Badly, I suspect, but it will be fun seeing how they get on.
Any of you NW-based types with time on your hands on May 1 can see them take their NL3 bow away to a side from Warrington - Woolston Rovers, last year's champions.
And readers of the Basildon Evening Echo can endure regular updates throughout the season.

My mate has had a season ticket for the Rhinos ever since he could shout "Get 'em onside referee!"

@ RS: Rugby league is a bit like rugby union, only with skill and finesse as well as brute force and curiously homo-erotic rituals. You must have seen it on TV sometimes, as two slate-grey towns from the M62 corridor do battle on a patch of mud in the midst of a torrential blizzard. What were you specifically worried about?
@ Thrash: Rhinos could be in for a good season this year ... probably won't stop Bradford but they should push them close.

Answering on Wintermute's behalf:
Great book btw. I'm a huge fan of Iain (M) Banks.

He's the same guy. He writes his "normal" stuff (if anything like the Wasp Factory can ever be described as normal
) as Iain Banks and sci-fi as Iain M Banks.

apologies for not responding earlier, but i was disappointing mr twain.
thanks to markfiend for replying on my behalf. not sure whether i am more pleased that someone recognised it , or that i finally have something in common with mr BP (that would be golf).
if anyone hasn't read the iain M banks oeuvre, start with consider phlebas and go from there.

Hehe it's a fairly distinctive image, no?
BTW, IMO the makers of
Halo should be paying Iain M a royalty...
