Obviously, a lot of Heartlanders will be aware of the machinations behind this, but it looks like the scheme has finally been green-lit:

Love this quote:
"Civil servants have been taking part in tests for several months but this is the first time members of the public have been able to undergo the procedures."
Lucky us eh?

All I got when I hit the link was aol's home page....but if I understand what you're referring to, it's not surprising is it? To any government, we ARE just a collection of inappropriately-orientated magnetic particles on some computer somewhere. And the sooner we are a collection of those on some card or other, they reason, the better.
Though, to my children, I'm still 'Daddy.'
To my family, I'm either someone who loves them or someone who's a disappointment.
To my friends, I'm still the person that caused them to want me to be a friend.
To the people I work with, I hope that I'm a help.
To some people I pass in the street, I might be 'I looked at him.'
Not an exhaustive list, but NO, I'm not a number...

No Mrs Snowey you are NOT a number.
But where I live I do HAVE a number. It's my social security number. It was my University ID number, but now a days...we don't use that number as such due to identity theft. Which is rampant here in the USA.
I remember travelling to Canberra AU on business and my Aussie colleagues....they were appallled that we had ....... Numbers. They thought it was the greatest anti freedom mechanism they could ever contemplate.
I have a number which my government uses to track me.
Happy? NO. Accept it. Yes.
Without it ...I can't get employment, which gets me health insurance. Mr. Bp too. He's on my plan.
It's a necessary part of our lives...which is why when anyone asks...privacy laws come into effect. We have to have them to protect us... And that is one reason Americans are so Keen to protection of our Privacy.. I mean really. do we want our med records available to one and all????
I dont think so... and I know,,..it's a fine line isn't my US compatriots?

Nonsense. Get yourself up to Chelmsford on a warm summer's afternoon and enjoy the thwack of willow on leather. Wait til they play Durham and I'll even shout for the beers.Burn wrote:Gripper wrote:Cricketing term. And yes I was. Now, sadly, not. As for numbers, I could be nine while nine, or I could be seven of nine. But I'd probably be 1973 for preference.

In the UK we already have a number- our national insurance number that we get at about age 16. New arrivals are allocated numbers & we all keep the same one for ever.
So, in theory, they can track us all already. But somehow they say they can't, & that's why (they say) there is so much benefit fraud etc. If they can't manage itty bitty info like this, no way are they having my iris print, fingerprints or DNA & asking me to pay for the privilege. I can't see that suddenly they'll be efficient & not confuse my biodata with someone who deserves a cavity search.

For one, people in favour of ID cards keep asserting that "people with nothing to hide" should be in favour of ID cards. I think that pretty much everyone has "something to hide"; there are skeletons in everyone's closet.
For second, this nonsense is budgeted to cost £30billion IIRC; a feck of a lot of hospitals, schools, police, whatever, could be funded with this, never mind the inevitability of budget over-spend on any government IT project
For third, as straylight points out, it is almost certain that mistakes will creep into the system somewhere along the line. How do the government know that you are who you say you are when you first apply for your ID card? What's to stop someone getting a card under a false identity?

The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.

That was uncommonly decent of you old chap. I thought we were on for a bit more fox chasing there.
Do I understand you have some exams coming up Ms Strange? If so, the very best of British to you.
