I didn't quite get it at the time, although Rain from Heaven seemed OK and Colours was listenable.

Since then its stock has risen. Giving Ground has proven itself to be a beast of a song live, and actually the version on Gift is pretty darn good as well.

Jihad is just so out there I'm still not sure quite what to make of it. It's so easy to say it was years ahead of its time but that does not adequately explain why nothing before nor since has sounded anything like it.


Finland is a perhaps a bit weak. I find critique of drum programming techniques about as interesting as analysis of drum solos. I almost prefer some of SSV to be honest

Colours I still love. I wish I could find someone who would concur that the version here says something other than "marching". Pushing, Putsching, perhaps...

I still like Rain From Heaven. It is Floodland in microcosm. That is enough to make it perfect.

The best and the worst thing about Gift is it proves he can do it and do it quick if he really wants or needs to... I don't need to tell you what a poor omen that is for the future.

Well, Wayne couldn't really do anything else as it would probably have resulted in more legal nonsense. Anyway, it was meant to be amusing - but if can't get that....

I like it as a whole, jihad is strange and I wouldn't listen to it alone, but its a graet opener for the album
Colours I love, nothig wrong with it.
giving ground is (for me) the best song on the album.
Finland is funny and I like to listen to the lyrics. but its about the same as Jihad...
and rain from heaven is a very good song but not as good as FaLaA and floodland...

Gift has matured over the years to become my all time favourite Von record. There's something indefinably sexy about it, and yeh - I think every single track works well. Im in full agreement about the likes of Jihad sounding like absolutely nothing else.

gift is a strong album - especially when considering its band political and legal/rights to name value.

now the question is: which legal battleground could we offer von today to inpire and motivate him? music against the re-election of mr. bush?

Just FYI I was the one who asked originally, although I had somehow got mixed up and thought it was Floodland that Hussey had slung mud at.

Cheers QB, anyway, I have been dying to read this for some time.

Although I retain a certain fondness for The m*****n I must say that the principal reason I'm not The Mock Hussey as opposed to The Mock Eldritch is that I find the utter vacuity of Hussey's lyrics frankly embarrassing. Back when I was 17 I didn't care, but as I've got older the lyrics become increasingly important to me, and thus The m*****n have lost my regard almost entirely.

If Rain From Heaven is Floodland in microcosm then Hussey's review of Gift is him (or at least his lyrics) in microcosm - superficial, ill-considered and missing the point entirely.

Having read it I wish I could have heard the sound of his jaw dropping when he heard Floodland

Incidentally, if we're discussing Gift I always felt it had a certain appeal. Giving Ground has always been superb, anyway. The album manages to be evocative despite being obviously rather rushed, and has its own sound not quite like anything else.

Moreover I like owning and listening to it because it's got rather a special place in the history of the band itself. Somehow all their records are unique and quite unlike one-another but they're part of the substance of the band. This is separate, in a way, and the product of a very unusual set of circumstances.

It's a little like having the first edition of something, or a freak mispressing where the cover art is back-to-front. It's the same basic thing but knowing it's got a history makes it somehow feel different.

Except of course that Gift was followed fairly closely by a real album.
If it's a circle then we've just found the end of it.

I love "gift", and considering the fact it was made in a hurry,
makes it even better and musicaly it realy stands - out, not
many bands sounded like this in the late 80 s. though
100nds appeard in the 90 s. Our man is a genius and nothing less

Most Sisters stuff perplexes me in one way or another, and the Gift album is no exception. I don't really know whether the fact it was recorded quickly should add anything to its credibility. I like the fact that nothing has sounded like it before or since - AFAIK.

I remember a non-Sisters-fan friend listening to Gift and mockingly singing along with the Chorus of Vengeance with their 'we for-give as we for-get...' line.

Mantras and affirmations can be pretty good for people who like their stuff repeated ad nauseum, I hear....
