If I dyed a very very very old going very grey tee shirt back to black, would it ruin an already faded print?

probably yes, I seem to remember trying that once, and the t-shirt disintergrated soon afterwards

Is the print intricate? Could try going over pattern with wax so the dye won't hold.

I have a Miss!on '86 (or '87) tour t-shirt and after a while the print seemed to wash out and was barely visible. Then it was accidentally washed with something that contained a lot of dye. My brothers white socks came out a dark colour, but the print on the t-shirt re-emerged and is now (if I remember rightly) a greenish colour.
