Calling UK petrol buyers ...

Received via my email this morning ...

"We are going to hit close to 89p a litre by the summer.
Do you Want petrol prices to come down?
We need to take some intelligent, united action.

Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain
day" campaign that was going around last April or May!

The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't
continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to
think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP at 77p -80p, we need to take
aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace not
sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers
need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of
petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing
their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two
biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not
selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices.
If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow
suit.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and
BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!

Now, don't whimp out on me at this point!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at
least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten
more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches
the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION
consumers!
If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends
each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one
level further, you guessed it... .. THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (and not
buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take?

If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of
receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!!

I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you!
Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you,
please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE

Action:
It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your
petrol at Shell, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons (75p) Jet etc. i.e.
boycott BP and Esso."

Get mailing ... :von:

The jungle drums have finally reached down south then. Got this one a week ago. I always try and buy my petrol from Morrisons anyway. But even that's 82p a litre now. Funny how increases in the price of crude oil hit the forecourts immediately but decreasses take a month to filter through.

Maybe ive got this wrong, but isnt like 90% or some similar figure,of a litre of gas all going in taxes to phoney Tony and his mates. Therefore wouldnt you need to do something to target the government to lower taxes rather than the oil companies?
Just a thought.

I don't think even Michael Howard could argue that it's Labour's stealth taxation policy that's increasing the price of crude oil on the world market.

Bizarrely enough the large amount of duty we pay on fuel kind of cushions us somewhat from the crude oil price-rises. Without duty the price of a litre would go from 10p* to 15p, a 50% rise; whereas from 80p to 85p is only a 6.25% rise.

As a rule of thumb it seems that petrol is supplied to the petrol station from the nearest refinery, so BP/Esso/whoever may actually supply your local supermarket!
Also, many petrol stations are franchises who make most of their profit through the shop (ever bought a loaf of bread from a 24 hour petrol station?) so not selling petrol may not hurt much although reduction in sales of the incidental stuff you buy when you go to pay for your fuel probably would.
75% of fuel price is duty. Its not the oil companies fault that our government wants to fleece the motorist for everything they have. And the petrol station themselves get 1p per litre.
If you want to shout at someone, shout at Blair....

And Bush. The crude price has gone up largely because of the Iraq war and the increase in terrorism that it has provoked.

Didn't the Yanks "pull out" of Saudi Arabia in an attempt to appease Bin Laden following 9/11?

I'm sure that'd be a good idea if people though he'd listen. But as has been proven time and time again, he doesn't listen no matter how loud you shout...

Brent Crude is about 70p per Gallon.

By the time it's been refinned and taxed and dutied it's nearly £4

But seeings as oil takes millions of year to produce and seconds to burn, maybe we'd be better campaigning for proper funding and investment into renewable energy sources.

Ed has a point. The west really needs to try to kick its oil addiction. The stuff won't last forever.

Very true. But it's not just the West is it? What's gonna happen when the Chinese start trading in their bikes for Reliant Robins?
