Hmm, the likeness is suspect...

Just picked up William Gibsons book The Idoru, and flipped the book over to see the pic of Mr. Gibson on the back, and...

Holy mother of god. I swear it's Andrew Eldritch! The pic looks stunningly similar to the pic in the imagebank of AE in the art book (but just a tad older, like Von looks now). So, alright, I assume it's just a coincidence, albeit an eerie one.

But then...

I read the book, and I swear there's quite a few Sisters references thrown in there. I really don't think I'm imagining this.

I think I even recall an interview where AE makes reference to Gibson (about talking to him, or something).

Can it be possible? Has anyone else read The Idoru and picked up on the subtle clues? My husband agreed that the whole thing is suspect.

Just found this. It's from an interview with William Gibson...
And, confesses the author, it wouldn't have been finished at all (the book the interviewer is asking about), were it not for a little timely advice from Brian Eno on writer's block, and repeated listenings to the Sisters of Mercy's similarly savage and distopic album Vision Thing. "I'm a huge Sisters fan," he enthuses. "I think Andrew Eldritch and I are similar creatures
Um, not sure what it means. Maybe I'm grasping.

I've read it, but quite a while ago. Never spotted any Sisters references though. I'll have another look and see what I notice

this comes up every now and again.

there are a few references - something to do with a scene on that bridge as well, IIRC? :?:

Indeed Gibson is a fan:

"Bruce Sterling introduced me to Sisters of Mercy on our DIFFERENCE ENGINE tour, and "Vision Thing" became our official tour anthem; so, no, I wasn't listening to them when I wrote NEUROMANCER. I was listening to what Andrew Eldritch listened to in order to write those songs, I intuit.

He's one fine lyricist, is Andrew Eldritch. "
