Temple of love live 83-85

Have any band members given an explanation of why they hardly ever played this live during the 83-85 period? Even around the time of it's release it wasn't played that often.
On the Trojan Horse bootleg someone plays the guitar intro to which Von says "No chance, he's being naughty" (or something similar).
It's been played for most of the post 85 period, just wonder why it was such a rarity in the 80's.

a) it was a bugger to program the drum machine
b) it was a bugger to play the riff for 7 minutes
c) it was a bugger to sing
d) it was cool not to play your biggest hit.
pick one.

And with all that, it doesn't sound too good on some of the old boots, either. Not easy to sing, and just a chopped up jangle of a job.

Similarly, why do we get only the short version now (since 1993, no less)? Does Andreas have to rejoin the band to show the current crew how to play it longer?
Actually I would not mind if Bruhn were in the lineup again and Adam took over bass duties.

I couldn't agree more... I give a lot of credit now to Mr Bruhn... He gave us some merry moments. BRING HIM BACK!!!! (with black hair, please)

Aha!
That old chestnut.

the simple answer is that the vocal line offered no pauses where Von could take a drag on his cigarette

I'm gonna defend Mr Whammy here, he can do it!
His first gig he played FALAA with the proper riff so he must be able to do TOL!
Von's probably told him not to do it, takes too long & Von probably wants to p*ss off & get back to wherever the f*ck he lives nowadays ASAP.
Saying all that, Andreas is a damn good guy. Tell Starling to get on his bike & bring Andreas back along side Mr W & I'll be a happy chappy.

I agree... for some reason, the Babylon Zoo thing is really hard to swallow.

I thought the main reason was that the intro/main riff was too difficult to play live for Gunn/Marx. Think Wayne used a little trick combining effects & his 12 string. And indeed programming the drumkit - but according to Wayne that was pain for every track.

The Wayne lineup never played Temple Of Love. It was first played on their European tour at the end of Aug'83 and probably at all the rest of the 1983 gigs. (I can't say ALL for sure as nobody has them all, but they play it at all the existing ones.)
I'm told that Gunn had already left by the time they played the last 3 gigs of 1983 in October (Stockholm and the 2 American dates), which makes it all the more impressive if it's Gary playing it all on his own without any help from Gunn (although going by the 1983 videos in circulation it looks like Gunn used to do a lot of standing around doing nothing). Maybe Quiff could ask Gary if it's true they played those 3 gigs as a 3-piece.
Didn't Eldo say in an interview (1984/85) that they don't play Temple Of Love because "it's too fast".

My copy of the Stockholm boot sounds like they may have used backing tapes to cover the second guitar. Naughty naughty.
But Von has gone on record saying that he actually played the riff on the single, cos none of the others were able to!!! Presumably the same would apply live, except - of course - Von couldn't play.
I do like the chopped-up jangle though, Hamburg Kir is a good example.
