Can one of you clever people diagnose the following symptoms:
upon burning an DVD ISO image file to DVD-R,
(burning at 4xspeed to 4xspeed writable 4.7gb DVD-R media)
-burn takes longer than usual (nearly twice the time)
-Nero 6 buffers (in software) seem to repeatedly fill and then empty over a period of seconds during burn process
-DVD burn light (on NEC DVD-RW/DVD+RW double layer writer)
flashes on and off every half second AT THE SAME TIME as the
hard disk light
?
please help!

WinXP SP1, Athlon 2800, 512 MB
hard disk : 120 gb
The NEC DVD Writer is the master on a second IDE cable,
(the first IDE cable has 2 hard disks on it)
this second IDE cable also has a samsung DVD reader
as a slave on it. The NEc writer is plugged into the
middle ribbon cable socket, the samsung is plugged
into the second ribbon cable socket (at the end).
they both share the same power cable
(one power socket plugged into each of the samsung
and the NEC)
that help? thanks

- First option is to twist the power cable so it wil get his feed direct from the soure (no sharing), burning can take much of the power (it's not commen, but do possible). it depends on the type of machine.
- Second option, try to switch the flat cable's so the cable with the hard disk will have the burning DVD (this wil be allot faster to trasfer data from c: to d: / e: or f: ) and make also sure that the burning dvd has a not share'd power cable.
* Alway's be sure to reconnect the the flat cable's red line on the good side ! I forgotten this so many time's,........... now I learned. *
Als be sure not to have much programs running on the back ground, they can realy take allot of memory in use. even with power full machine's like the one you have.
- Third option when the above does not work,....try to see if the diag-x of your system (direct-X 8.x 9.x) sees the trouble if not cotact the store where you got it from. --> search --> diag --> hit the bleu and yellow icon.
I had allot of trouble with my DVD-rom player, the fist 2 options where both the solution form my problems.

many thanks for your help.
I will seriously consider your suggestions, however what is strange
is that I have been successfully burning DVD-Rs for a month
now, and the problem has only just started happening.
Ive tried burning at 2x speed, and the buffer underruns seem to have
stopped, but the burn is still failing at the end.
ive been using the same DVDr media.
Ive tried turning off anti virus, and firewall etc. but no difference.
the hard disk looks in need of a de-fragment. could this be
a cause ??

Spyware can also run in the back ground, you can download these 2 programs from
http://www.download.com --> search
- "Adware SE" from "Lava soft"
- Spy Bot
these 2 in combination will keep your PC clean
You cannot imagine how much junk come's on to your computer by just surfing the net. They can slow down your computer, use allot of mem. and make your PC more voneurble for hackers or more junk mail (bad english writing I know).
try to use both programs, and who knows !
