Go on, surprise me. How many people here have Russian flexidisk Sisters bootlegs?

That's a point though, how much should I pay for one (assuming I wanted one).

not me, and i wouldnt even pay a 50p for one. utter waste of money - look s**t, sound s**t, not remotely official, and everything on them is available in perfect cd quality for a fraction the price.

unless you live somewhere where legit stuff is unavailable (ie: the former soviet union) they are utterly pointless.

No no no, I'm not planning to bootleg Sisters songs (that's so unoriginal it's sad)

I meant for my own band. It's an alternative to burning CD-Rs, which would look more than a little unprofessional.

You could just look for pressing plants / record studios in the yellow pages and see how much they charge for flexis; it would probably be cheaper (and easier) than trying to press them yourself.

i could ask choque what he does? i know he has fairly limited runs of around 500 x 7" singles done for bands on his label...

Apparently very few plants (if any?) now make flexis, but independant ones might still.

If you could, Quiffy, I'd be very grateful.

The reason I wanted to know about pressing flexis from home, especially if the machinery isn't that large/expensive, is because as much as I'd love to give out music on CD-Rs, nobody will pay money for a CD-R, and they're open to piracy because no-one could tell the difference between a real and a well made fake.
Flexis, however, would be easy to send out to people, and be collectible.

That and there's no record label that would -dream- of accepting me, so pressing them myself would be the only viable option. (Plus I wouldn't want to pay hundreds for 500 records, when I might only sell about 100.

I confess to owning the Ribbons one. I got it ages ago so I can't remember how much I paid for it. It wasn't much but it's not something I'd fork out anything for now. The flexi itself looks pretty uninteresting - a clear square with a paper sleeve (if you could call a folded sheet of paper a sleeve). I've never attempted to play it so I've no idea how bad (or good) it sounds.

Sorry Dark, I'm actually quite attached to it. It doesn't look worth s**t but it's the only one I've got and I don't think I want to part with it.

No worries, it was worth a shot. Just I've seen them for sale from £2 to £15. Why can't people just sell a whole lot of them, about 10 or so for a couple of quid?
I'd buy them..

Vestax make a domestic vinyl cutting deck, but they're a right bugger to use, they cost £6000 and the blank discs are a tenner each when you can find 'em.

Still it's better than the evil of C.D.s, bands that don't release vinyl smell of bum...

Yeah, but like I said, I may be able to do a thousand, I may only be able to sell 100, and since nobody would pay £70 odd for a record, that's THAT plan out the proverbial window.

Well saved. Almost. You can't kid a kidder. Btw flexi-discs are sh!te. Even I wouldn't let them near my stylus, and I'm not that choosy. Stick to CD-Rs. Face it, you're gonna have to give them away anyway. Too easy to copy? You should be so lucky.

I just like flexis because they're something different. It's just so annoying that companies don't charge you for every 7" you need, instead of buying them in quantities of 500 / 1000s. -_-

Anyway, no skin off my nose if you don't want to hear songs I make, Francis. You're the one missing out.

In that case why not buy a printer that prints on cd-r's, then you could buy unbranded silver discs and print on them and they'd look exactly the same as the factory made discs (I suspect a lot of the "factory made" boots are made in this way.)

Or you could use this Lightscribe thing that HP are developing. Nero has support for it now, but initially it will only be available for HP CD/DVD writers although they say any normal writer can be configured for it.

Basically it burns images onto the top of the discs. Looks like you may have to buy special CD-Rs and DVD-Rs though for it to work. That may be quite expensive, but worth it if you only want to make a few copies.

Ah, I didn't know you COULD get silver CD-Rs. I thought they still had a sheen to them which meant you could pretty much tell they were CD-Rs.

I'm sure I've got a couple of boots recorded on plain silver CDRs. They're a right bugger cos I always end up putting them in the player upside down.

Do they have the brand name on the other side? If they have, say, silver CD-Rs, with plain white on the other side, then those I'll be buying.

Do you really think I'd put them in upside down if this were the case? No, both sides of the disc are totally plain silver, hence the confusion. I really should get round to buying a new marker pen...
