Laptop Grief

I've had my laptop running fine for months. a month
ago I bunged 2x512 MB RAM in it, to replace the
2x256 MB RAM it has originally, which appeared
to run fine for about 2 weeks, then suddenly
my Win XP installation started halting &
blue screening. Sometimes it gives falts
while running programs, eg. program needs
to be shutdown, failed to read address x00000...
I've tried all combinations of one and both
of the new RAM chips - no difference. The blue
screens and reboots seem to be getting
more frequent so its now unusable.
Is this a problem with the new RAM?
If so, why did it take 2 weeks to emurge??
Admittedly I didnt use it that much in the first 2 weeks.
I should be able to get hold of the original RAM chips in
a couple of weeks, so I'll try and put them back in again.
Any clue?
