The Heartland Effect

There's an article in todays Daily Express concerning the death of 17-year-old Carina Stephenson. She disappeared from her family home four days ago and her body was discovered fully clothed in woods near her home yesterday. Foul play is not suspected.
She recently starred in a reality show with the rest of her family called 'The Colony' which has yet to be aired and following her death is unlikely to be shown.
Yet the media, in the absence of any concrete facts spawn the following:
The Daily Express wrote: Carina, who eventually wanted to join the Army, is said to have come back from filming "happy and positive" as she continued her gap year before starting to do A-levels in September.
But she became hooked on internet chatrooms and cult 'Goth' websites. After she vanished last Thursday, detectives took away her laptop to check it contents for clue.
Log-off now kids before it's too late.

Heartland has had some strange effects on me, it has to be said...
HOWEVER. Is the fact that she and her family were part of a "reality" TV show not slightly more noteworthy than her popping on to alt.gothic once in a while?

well well...
So the old trend of 'blame it on rock'n roll' finally shifts towards the Goff Culture.
Being a metalhead myself, this make me sigh with relief...
Now I can start burning churches and playing Priest backwards again without some moron televangelist asswipe breathing in my neck
IZ.

It is a terrible thing to cope with indeed... Look at me, desperately trying to get to study, and sneaking in and out of here every five seconds
-back to the books, really-

Before I joined Heartland I was bright, optimistic, and ambitious. Now I wear black socks everyday, and mostly just want to die. But not without taking someone with me, of course!

We're not doing our job properly then...
Let me be the first to suggest it. Or a water pistol at least!

What about the billions of Goths worldwide who don't die mysteriously? I fully expect a non-mysterious vodka bottle to be near my un-surprisingly pickled body when my time comes.
Pah. Journalism. I'd expected at least a gram of common sense from the Express...nah, who'm I trying to kid?
Sympathies, Blast...kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out

But that was me BEFORE good ol' Heartland! I still wear black socks every day, but mostly, I just want a *life*.
Hmm. Dunno which is more depressing, really...

Are you *quite* mad?
Have you been to the sodding U.S. lately? Good lord.

I just think it's terribly sad that kids 10-19 are topping themselves. Not having anyone to talk to and taking the decisions they do.
It's just so, so tragic. But it's modern day life.
Unfortunately.

Ah, the media bashing thread. Always enjoy this one.
I'll concede that the use of 'hooked on' is questionable and emotive. But if detectives have found that she was a regular visit to a set of websites, isn't that legitimate information to report about her?
Assuming they've taken that info from a police source (maybe not the case, but I'm not convinced _you'd_ know otherwise), why is it any less a concrete fact than 'who wanted to join the army'?
Sorry if you're a bit sensitive about how you might be perceived, though.
Besides, I thought this was going to be a thread about the on-going successes of the Heartland dating agency.
That's a much scarier Heartland Effect. What if they breed?

The parents have already confirmed she never had a lap-top.
Media excess?
*********************************************
But your last two lines made me chuckle. And Quiffy consulting his liability lawyers.
Congrats on your Championship by the way.
Cardiff bound, Hammerette-less?

Heartland Dating Agency?! Why wasn't I informed??!!

I have no intention of breeding. Does that help?

I
knew something like this would happen. As if there aren't a million reasons why it go wrong, it will go wrong in the FULL GLARE of Heartlander attention!
Good luck to you all.

Loki: Fair enough on the lap-top. Sounds like a good honest fabrication from a paper that's spent five years cutting back on employing editorial staff. Should know better than to start defending the Express
Championship was fun, thanks. And now the hard part begins. Hopefully without West Ham.
Cardiff on Monday. No idea what the Hammerette's plans are, but since she's gradually become aware of my lack of enthusiasm for her team she's considering travelling 'with the fans'. I'll be travelling with a stab of pique that this miserable excuse for a team are continuing to disrupt my summer.
Sinny - PM me if you're really _that_ interested

One point that I would imagine has more relevance than what websites she did (or didn't) visit, or than that she was in a "reality TV" show: Carina Stephenson came out as gay to her parents not long before she disappeared. Wild speculation, I'll admit, but if their reaction was not good, I'd imagine that to be a more obvious reason for her (presumed) suicide than media influences.
