I had a weird experience once after visiting a house where a seance had recently been done. (The tenants had recently moved in and had uneasy feelings about the house.)

And, like The Exorcist, Ouija Boards are probably the most dangerous thing of the lot. Watch out!

But luckily Linda made a swift recovery and is a better person for it...

I'm always open to persuasion (perhaps I shouldn't advertise that! ) but right now I'll err on the side of "it's all a load of old bollocks".

I've experienced some really amazing coincidences in my life, but they're not quite enough for me...

my mum had a weird one once. when she was little and in bed she used to feel like someone was sitting on her bed watching over her. she investigated this and discovered that there had been two sisters in the house one of which was very ill and who had had thre same bedroom as my mum used. the feeling of someone sitting on her bed must have been the sister who was watching over her ill sister (the ill one - sorry bad day at work = bad grammar!)

also two of my old housemates reported having out of body experiences both on the same night. i, however did not have one! oh well, maybe i'm not receptive enough to these things. oh and house next door had a poltergeist

Or, the cat chose to sleep on her chest? I've recently become addicted to 'Most Haunted' (thanks Jo ) Despite Derek annoying the hell out of me, it grips me. Howeverbetter than MH, the programme after it, 'Sensing Murder' is utterly brilliant. Even Gaz, the Sceptic's sceptic has to go to bed coz he finds it hard to poo-poo.

I'd like to believe but it'd scare the bejezuz outta me if I got first hand evidence ....

she didnt have a cat

had a few experiences that the juries still out on...if i'm honest then most can be attributed to "chemistry"...

.when i was about 13 a small group of us did it and got jim morrison.(yeah right-thats what i thought)the others involved mostly had only a vague idea who he was (if at all) but i had just finished reading "no-one here gets out alive" so was the only one who could possibly have been pushing the glass in order to get the complex answers given.i swear on my life that i wasnt CONCIOUSLY pushing the glass...but subconciously?dont know how that one works (Morrison may have been a boring light-weight but i'ld like to think he's got better things to do with his time in the hereafter)

Apart that, yes, but I'm not telling. You wouldn't believe it anyway. So let's just stay with the "yes".

When I lived in student digs in York there were a few strange things. They're not very exciting, so scroll on if you want thrills and spills.

Four of us lived in this place (279 Hull Road, opposite the Black Bull, if anywhere knows the area). None of us smoked, yet there was a constant smell of cigarettes. At first we assumed this was due to visitors smoking but it didn't match up.

We also had occasional cold spots, but it was a student house and we were too poor to heat things properly. So far, so dull.

One night flat-mate Liz and I were watching TV and she started asking me if I'd noticed anything 'odd'. She went on to talk about sensing there was some old woman who she'd sensed in the house.

I'm a sceptic about such things, and scented a wind-up. Pointing to the vacant armchair (the one with the crappy view of the TV which we never sat in) I said something like: "Oh, the old bat sitting just there?". Nonchalent, matter-of-fact, you can picture it.

Liz shot out of the room like a rat up a drainpipe, and sobbing was heard from the other side of her bedroom wall. After she was coaxed away she insists that the 'presence' was generally felt sitting in that same chair I had picked out. She'd taken my (lame) gag as corroboration of her story and freaked out.

A four-strong council-of-war was called to discuss the matter. Paul, a fellow sceptic, concluded the debate by challenging our presence to 'do something' that night. We went to the pub, then to bed.

Next morning the toilet cistern had cracked, flooding the house. Water running through the ceiling, down the light fittings, no end of fun.

It wasn't cold enough for the water to have frozen and expanded to crack it naturally. We'd gone to bed without noticing a problem, and none of us were so drunk that we might have fallen over on it and broken it (plus you'd notice that). There was no obvious explanation of what had happened ... except the challenge from the previous night. Try telling that to a landlord who has just seen a large bill drop on his doormat.

I've no idea what this might all be about, to be honest. As ghost stories go it's not a thriller, but it's all true. Who knows?

The problem that scepticism faces in dealing with claims of the paranormal is that an attempt to explain your ghost-story as coincidence lacks the emotional appeal of, well, a ghost. It looks like special pleading to say that the toilet probably broke as a result of something totally unconnected to your "challenge".

And of course there's the problem of confirmation bias. You have a datum that seems to confirm your hypothesis of a "ghost". However you are likely to forget other instances when you have made similar challenges that have failed. (e.g. you might say "If there is a god, let me win the lottery" )

It's a good story though and I don't want to spoil it with over-analysis.

But there remains no obvious explantion for the breakage of the cistern. Including supernatural interference.

What would realistically cause a toilet cistern to crack? Apart from the freezing hypotheses, which didn't match the temperatures at the time, I can't think of anything other than someone hitting it, hard, with a blunt object.

I agree that my ghost is not very realistic, but it's no more implausible than any other option.

There could have been a crack already that just gave in that night. It's impossible to tell.

Anyway, enough scepticism. "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Maybe it was a ghost.

My parents have had a visitation recently. THings kept moving - chairs turning round, kettle switching on, ornaments shifting and most significantly a picture of my Dad with his brother (who has been dead for 7 years) turning face down at least 5 times.

And then my father had a heart attack.

He was in hospital for 4 weeks and during all that time my Mum has been experiencing a presense in the upstairs of the house.

I visited a couple of weeks back and somebody walked between us on the landing (in a hallway - moves.) and I really have never believed or considered it to have any element of truth but I definetly felt something.

Anyway, she said the day before Dad came out of hospital following a triple bypass op (end of last week) she felt the presense leave.

I mentioned it to a mate and he was of the view that it was my Uncle watching out for my Dad.

Weird, eh?

I've actually had a few experiences over the years, two of which were decidedly harrowing, one involving poltergeist activity, with witnesses.

Beyond that, and despite that, I describe myself as an open-minded skeptic.

I believe the spirit world exists (ie, I believe spirits exist) but I also believe that they have extremely little relevance to you or I in our day-to-day life, unless we consciously choose to involve ourselves in the spirit world.

Do I believe in life on other planets? Dunno, I'm kind of busy living my own life on this one.

I'm a scientist; I can't refute these hundreds of thousands of stories and tales and experiences without some hard proof, and that's even harder to come by. I'm interested in EVP which is the leading field of research into the phenomena, if not actual 'Ghost Stories' per se.
Interestingly, the establishment of EVP came a few years after I read this fantastic story from OPI8.com's X-Minute Theatre.

The up-shot is, I can't rule anything out until I have a conclusive reason to do so. Personally, I've had a few...things happen which I can't accurately account for.
