Well, he had one or two things going for him: 1) He wasn't Thatcher. In fact, Thatcher made him look friendly and quite benign. He and Thatcher despised each other to the end, which I always thought was a mark of relative good character. But yes, he was still a Tory.
2) He brought Britain into the EEC (now EU). Not a bad thing, I think.
Hmm. Short obituary.

There goes half of Mike Yarwood's repertoire then.
Don't remember him as PM to be honest, a bit too young. Reading about him in the paper this morning though he struggled to even mention Thatch's name so like MrChris says he couldn't be all bad.

All together now:
Kick out the Tories.."
(anyone with the CNT album is advised to listen to that track, as opposed to just Body Electric and Adrenochrome.

"All political careers end in failure."
Pity Heath's
started that way

Yet how many politicos can end their careers on a higher note than when they were actually in power?
Plus he had no time for Thatcher. Got to be a good thing

Earliest memory of politics - seeing Heath on telly by candlelight - must have been '74 during the powerstrikes. I thought there was a powercut at the time, but as we didn't have a gas-powered telly I guess there couldn't have been...
Yes he hated Thatch (& vice versa) but he was still a politician (originally this said 'giant prick' but then I thought of a worse insult).
