Style of music on Vision Thing?

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

I was reading back through some old topics, and found someone said that they couldn't possibly consider Vision Thing a "goth rock" record.

After listening to it a few more times, I'd have to strongly disagree.

1) Even though it seems hard rock like, the guitars are heavily distorted but not high in the mix, and also don't have that extra bite, possibly as a result of it. This is more akin to gothic rock than doesn't use "clangy" guitars than anything else, unless they make a bauhaus like clang, they're generally not as high in the mix(Lucretia is a good example of this) as they would be in "Hard Rock", or many other styles of Rock.
2) Ribbons! Come on. I can't think of any other word to describe it.
3) The atmosphere of the songs is still very dark in a way that you don't find in most rock music. It almost comes across as "glam metal", though.
4) The somewhat typically goth cover.
5) There isn't really a genre it fits any better (see 1).
6) Andy's singing hasn't exactly changed that much.
7) It probably annoys him if you think it is anyway, which is often a plus.

Don't worry, I'm not that kind of goth. I'm actually much closer to the type of people that are goths but claim not to be goths, except when they feel like getting in someone's face about it.

Vision thing is pretty good, but it's way too short and feels "compressed" in general, if you know what I mean. It doesn't have the Wild, imprecise feeling of First and doesn't have the originality and atmosphere of Floodland

I way overlistened to Floodland, but I think the kind of synth type stuff that was used would have been much better backed up by guitar, I don't think it supported itself enough. And I would have liked This Corrosion more if it was either more progressive, or 2-3 minute shorter.
Fine album, though.

i'd agree. and i've said similar on here before.

apart from "when you dont see me" which is a very average tune which has very little character about it (the import single version is a slightly perkier mix to be fair), the whole album's sound is way too under-stated to cut it as a trad rock album.

the drums are too hollow, the guitars (while still power-chording for england (germany?)) are still fairly subdued and compressed, and most un-metal.

as a goth album its a bit too rocky. as a rock album its a bit to gothy. and as anything else its a bit too silly. but like so many others, i love it  :von: :notworthy:

apart from "more".

which is poo.

:!: ;D

You Could Be The One should have been on it, then it woulda been perfect!

I <3 "You Could be the One"!

It's perfectly obnoxious and upbeat, sort of AOR taking the p*ss out of its audience without them noticing. Or something. I'll stop before I start sounding like an NME journo.

Incidentally, I was playing that in the car the other day and on "You could be the one to get your flowers pressed" my mother innocently inquired "Is that meant to be rude?"

Sorry, Mr. Blast. The best thing about the song is that it is left off the album.

Ahhhh goway! Fabulous song.

BTW does anyone else think that this place has YCBTO's lyrics wrong...

VT is not very good.

I don't care whether it fits a label of "gothic", "rock" (ic), or AOR, it really just doesn't stand up as a Sisters record.

As I've said before, FALAA and Floodland couldn't have been made by anyone but The Sisters Of Mercy, for better or worse.

Vision Thing was/is just average product. :|

On your intro thread Roasalie I said I had to do a double take when you said you'd got all 3 albums as I always forget VT, this is why.

So the Sisters only had two "proper" albums :P Time for a new one, then.

I only once listened to YCBTO, so now it's the second time. Not a bad song.

BUT, the best single from that era has got to be WYDSM. It was always my favourite track on Vision Thing (though Ribbons comes close), and the single remix is the best song on a single since Bury Me Deep (or if it's a-sides only, Anaconda)

Such a mass debate...... yup, I have a agree with Johnny M that it is largely a cock-rock album, not that there isn't a place for it - ie very drunk on the dancefloor at 1.45am. Wasn't it done by Von to break the US-rock market and make a tonne of money while taking the p*ss out of US rockers & the media hopefully without them noticing the irony, etc?!

Its certainly the case that tonnes of metal-heads I knew suddenly got into the Sisters after this release who wouldn't touch em with a barge pole previously. But try and get them to listen to anything pre-Steinman and they still run a mile.

Of course what we really need to hear are the original demos...... anyone.......................?

PS Ribbons has GOT to be the best track on the album (IMHO) - why doesn't he/didn't he/couldn't he do more in that vein?
Is this the place I used to know as Fatherland?

Agree even more

Now one of the things I like most about it is the change of style compared to the previous albums... And I don't give a single damn if it's cock-rock, goth or whatever other s**t...
Styles are a lie.

'Something fast' is IMHO one of the best songs (von has) ever written.
Put their heads on f*cking pikes in front of the venue for all I care.
