Andrew Eldritch, should you not be aware, is the frontman of the sublime, classic, and altogether legendary band The Sisters Of Mercy. We entered the blackness that is his CD collection, and marvelled at Mr. Eldritch’s ability to dodge the question in hand…

1) How big is your CD collection?

Bigger than my head.

2) Your favourite CD that no one else you know owns?

Too late: I've just found another person with the Salaryman album.

3) A CD you paid through the nose to own?

I'd pay a fortune, if I didn't have connections, for the box set of early Pere Ubu albums.

4) The last chart CD you bought?

All Saints – ‘Black Coffee’ and Destiny's Child – ‘The Writing's On The Wall’.

5) What CD that you loaned out would you like back RIGHT NOW?

Cockney Rebel – ‘Human Menagerie’

6) What piece of vinyl do you take with you, knowing full well that it won't fit into the CD case?

For three separate reasons that's a bloody stupid question.

I don't know everyone. Has she got a sister?

Vinyl, if it didn't hiss and crackle, and if it could reproduce slightly higher frequencies. Or a 96kHz CD (of an analog or 96kHz recording) in a 12" sleeve.

"Probably a record by the Sweet ( Yes, that IS the seminal '70s kings of glam! -ED). The siren song. What was it called...? 'Blockbuster'. Why did I buy it? Because it was great!

" I don't buy records - I'm a rock star! The last record i blagged was the re mastered box set by ('70s art punks) Pere Ubu, 'Datapanik in the year zero'. Actually, all my old Pere Ubu records got nicked. They were the reason that i became a punk rocker, that band. So they were the people who ruined my life..."

"I find it difficult to shag on a tourbus. You've always got colleagues looking over your shoulder. It's like performing onstage...."

"Something with a girl singer. Anything at all - I don't care, as long as it's a girl singing. Either that or an old jazz or blues record - you don't start analysing old records. Which is what you need at that time of night."

"One of mine, I think! Nothing else is quite that vicious"


FAVOURITE RECORD SLEEVE ?
"Thats a tough one. The last one I though was funny was 'Vulgar Display of Power' by Pantera. The one with the fist across the face. Very much to the point"

"I can't even remember the words to my own songs, let alone any others. Other peoples songs....?(long pause) I've gone blank sorry. There are plenty of them..."

"'Rock 'N' Roll part 2' by Gary Glitter. I'm not taking the p*ss - I think anyone who listens to a Gary Glitter record becomes a young kid. It is rock'n'roll pure and simple."


RECORD YOU'S RECOMMEND TO A KERRANG READER ?
"Hmm, thats a tricky one. You'd probably have to wean them slowly. I'd probably recommend 'Whats going on', by Marvin Gaye. Thats a record that absolutely everyone should hear."

This interview is from the early-mid 90's before Mr Glitter was arrested, and was a big attraction on the xmas/new year cabaret circuit (a few large venues were sold out). said you could blame himself for the sudden rise in popularity!

Seriously, even I'M more of a punk [rocker] than him.

i don't think he's referring to becoming a punk rocker in the postcard-punk-30-years-after-the-event sense -he's probably on about at the time (being old enough to have been a punk-rocker when it was a fashion and not an anachronism)...loads of old punks don't look the same as they did then. anyway, punk is an attitude that does not necessitate looking like a punk-rocker.

No, I read these interviews again, and they're still as arrogant and self-gratifying as before.

Oh well.

And they show the to-the-point kind of humor I like a lot.
And actually nothing but honesty. Say "stupid question" when it is one. The Question those interviewers asked were even boring to read. (I wouldn´t answer half of them..)
Thinking Eldo has gone through that routine dozens of times I understand well why he hates it that much.
