note the similar lyrical themes throughout both songs...
the essence of ToL is that "life is short and love is always over in the morning"
the essence of GG is "everything is lost and your trust lies broken"
not that different really.
shame ToL doesnt have a mick karn bassline though...

What’s the difference between a buffalo and a bison?
You know, that's exactly what I thought when I first heard Giving Ground (1986): TOL with new lyrics, minus the power and minus the originality, because we'd heard that riff before, in a Sisters song. And I hated GG. Later, when I got older and wiser I just didn't like it. At all. Since 2005 I love this song. I still see the similarities, but I'm rather inclined to agree with what you say, that there is an (intended) interesting connection.
You can't fix stupid.
never thought of any similarity between both tracks - and i played along to all sisters tunes, which easily makes you discover a lot of simple similarities. when listening to gg i always follow the synth-line, which drives the track along it's chosen road to legend. many sophisticated lines use a simple back-up track carrying them, which makes them a kind of popular song. talking about the fine guitar-lines in gg (which might be the reason for similarity) i would rather think of driven like the snow, marian, otw, tc, black planet. tol at least ended up in deliverance.
in fact i love most of the 93 renditions of gg, and in 2005 it was just a pleasure as well. straight to the bones. as tol was.
