I just read the BBC website and there's been more bombs in Bali - I was there on holiday earlier this year and actually went to Kuta where they had the original bomb and the one that went off this weekend. This just totally sickens me

Indeed a horrible thing, even more so if you actually know the place, gives a certain connection to it...

Luckily the impact has not been as severe as the previous one, but still :urff:

This is a bit weird, I'm sure there's loads I should be saying here but I can't think of it. Am I (are we?) getting too used to these things happening?

@ BoF - would it sicken you less if it had been somewhere you'd never been?

@ Ruffers - we've always been used to attacks in foreign countries. There's not a great deal to say about the deaths of people a long way away without any particular connection to us. Unfortunately in an age where no news story can go by without people desperately trying to clamber onto an emotional bandwagon (the post-Diana people's everything extravaganza, if you will) we are made to feel slightly inadequate for not feeling like it's a matter of burning importance to us.

At the time of the bombings in 2002, I was staying in Brisbane, Australia. Went to Darwin for a trip I pre booked. There were quite some planes flying in bringing in the dead and wounded from Bali as there were a lot of Aussies involved.

The Darwin arrival terminal was a very sad place to be!!! Won't ever forget it.

true story...my friend scot is a successful (but dodgy!) businessman in singapore and works all over the far east. he was in bali at the time of the first bombings and was supposed to pick up friends from outside the club next to the one where the first bomb was detonated...which would have meant being in the street when the second one went off :urff:
fortunately, because he is a dreadful driver he crashed (without injury) on route and phoned ahead to tell his friends not to wait for him and get a taxi -thus saving all their lives! lucky bastard, to say the least.
