@Mik: I got your "Ping - please ignore" yesterday night. Everything seems to be fine with Dominion, it's just very, very quiet.

I heard about the Dominion mailing list and wanted to sign up, but I couldn't find it on google and figured it was defunct. :|

http://toybox.twisted.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/dominion is the place you want to go...
But mostly it isn't half as interesting as this place

Odd. I've not had anything. Could be that twisted is a blocked domain. Anyone else subscribing using a gmail address?

Now, now, Zeno, don't be unfair.
It's been the place where I got to know most of the people I travel with now, and it's brilliant, although less easy going than here. Flamewars occurr(ed) more often and at one point it got so bad that as a remedy (or that's how I perceived it) Heartland was founded. But still, for me it's THE other place, it's just different from Heartland. And of course it's less lively there now that everybody chats on Heartland, but you can't blame Dominion for that (and I don't blame Heartland either as both places have their pros and contras)...

Just my two pence... 8)

I was half joking and said mostly, which isn't always, but you're right, I have to admit it has its positive sides as well...

Obviously I don't know what it was like many years ago (allright, a couple  ), but I have the feeling since the time I joined that other place less and less people contributed to it, and now there's only a handful of people contributing to it left - except for when the summer tour was on. I have the feeling it's more high-brow and more of a closed society than this place, but that does not take away I often enjoyed reading posts on there, however there have been plenty of other times I either did not understand what they were about or they did not interest me as well (but, that can happen on here too, so that does not mean a thing).

Nevertheless I'd rather see it as a lively place, instead of only getting a mail every now and then from it, like now.

Apologies, did not mean it that way

I'm registered there but have never had any mailings either.

@Mik: But if we get your ping-Dominion-mails while you don't get them doesn't the problem rather lie somewhere in your mail account? I'm only guessing, but I think if Dominion had a problem with gmail accounts it wouldn't accept your posts and you'd get something like a "awaits moderator approval" message back.

No apologies needed, Zeno. :D
I joined Dominion in late 2000 and therefore got to know at least a little of what it was like before Heartland existed. I agree with you that there is/was a certain high brow attitude, which I don't like either, because a) it prevents "normal" people and newbies from talking freely, while b) it doesn't prevent bunny boilers and flame warlords from ruining discussions. BUT: I believe there would have been a "window for democratisation" (take some of the high brow mentality away) if people had been limited to that mailing list. The fact that Heartland offers a forum for all possible discussions took a lot of life away from Dominion, and I think that's a pity.
Sometimes it seems to me that certain interesting discussions don't happen anymore at all, because some Dominion "natives" don't post on Heartland and on Dominion there's nobody left to discuss with. I miss those discussions a lot, because they made me learn things that I never find here.
I never perceived Dominion as a closed society though, although things would have been easier for me initially, had it occurred to me to introduce myself before joining the first discussion... Somehow I often tend to forget about the most basic but important details...

@ Mik - yeah I got your *ping* message and I do get all of the dominion postings (I have a hotmail account)...although it has been in shallow waters for awhile.

It's fine with my gmail but as has been said, it's just very quiet I think. I got your ping by the way.

Nothing special. I just think people were a bit puzzled that somebody suddenly joined out of the blue. People react more warmly if you start properly by introducing yourself - like in real life...

They do?

Maybe that'd do the trick then
