Techy firewally question, please help

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

Can someone please tell me what the hell is going on with my
connectivity/firewall.

config: gigabyte board, P4 3Ghz, 3GB RAM, 256 x8 AGP

ADSL broadband.
D-Link DSL-504T ADSL Router.

2 PC's connected to the router (not wireless)

Valid IP Range: 10.1.1.2 - 10.1.1.254

Static Addresses configured in the router
for the 2 pcs: (the pc in question is cx-pc below)
10.1.1.2 dell-cpxj650 Static
10.1.1.3 cx-pc Static

both pcs run win xp sp2 and are both set to obtain
an IP address automatically in network settings.

issue:

I have:

Sygate personal firewall 5.6 (latest update)
MSn messenger 7.5 (latest)
IE 6 / yahoo mail


Problem:

I can browse the web ok.

I can visibly see IE6 and MSN messenger in my allow
list in Sygate personal firewall, although
when I try to connect to MSN it fails.
the msn diagnostic turns up no problems.
When I log into yahoo mail in IE6, it connects,
but wont do anything when I try and check my new
mail (page cannot be displayed).

IF i turn off sygate and let it allow all traffic,
both apps both work fine.

Any suggestions on how Sygate is giving me grief? :urff:
What can I do to stop this?

(my security settings in IE are set to "medium" etc,
i.e. all the usual stuff)

incidently I've just noticed I cant submit a post on heartland
when sygate is on either, I had to switch it off....then it works,
what is going on?

Have Sygate's Personal Firewall too, and whenever it gave me any trouble, I just de-installed it and re-installed it...

Also perhaps you might want to check if your windows XP firewall is still running, remember something about those two not going too well together

Why should you install a sofware firewall when you have an internal firewall in your router, I always wondered...

Just ditch the Sygate (or ZoneAlarm, or BlackIce or whatever...) and use the hardware firewall from your router.

Maybe Sygate and your internal firewall are clashing with each other...

specified the static ips in windows, as well as the router:
