Hiya,

First post, etc.

I accumulated a number of Sisters boot tapes back in the 80s. Whilst it would be nice to upgrade them to CD, I don't have the time (or energy) to risk trading for items that may - potentially - sound worse than the tapes I already have.

So ... has there been any effort to transfer anything from cassettes of know history? ie. mastertapes, first or second generation, etc? If not, it would be a worthwhile exercise for the Sisters community. You may be surprised in the leap in quality from a master to a third or fourth or fifth gen tape (and noise reduction is no replacement for a low gen tape.)

Nice idea - I've been sorting my old tapes recently...
I don't think I have anything better than 3rd gen at best and quite a few of the old ones aren't even close to that
I was even stupid enough to throw a pile of tapes out about 10 years ago

Generation doesn't seem to be *that* much of an issue within the Sisters trading community. Rare trades are more of an issue - people will only swap for something that hasn't surfaced yet. Certainly when talking about the pre-90 gigs.

Transferring tapes can be labourious and I would indeed suggest you have a look at the weeding section to see if it hasn't already been done. Do you have a list somewhere?

I'd definitely admit to never even thinking about it at the time - I was just happy to get recordings of the shows. I suspect it's probably too late to track down a lot of the master recordings and pretty difficult to identify who's got the lowest generation stuff which is a shame..

I've always wanted to find master copies of the recordings that were used for the pressed/silver boots - you know the ones that were impressive quality but had chopped a couple of tracks to fit onto a single disc...

No list and no known gens! I just have my tapes in storage. I was a teenager and didn't even know people kept a note of such things.

I'm involved in a couple of the big Nirvana sites. If you take a look at www.nirvanaguide.com you'll see just how successful the community has been in tracking down masters and other known gen. People have really strived to share the best of everything.

So, for example, maybe a recording circulated from a tape of unknown history. Someone finds a first gen. The old version becomes obsolete and everyone can access that upgrade. We've also tried to make as many 'real' bootlegs as redundant as possible by tracking down the tapes the boots were made from.

As time passes it would be increasingly hard to find Sisters stuff, but maybe people could post MP3 clips of their tapes or something and everyone could decide that John X's tape was the best sounding version or that bootleg Z was still the best source for something.

I seem to recall my Bradford 85 was really good. If I get time I could dig that out to start with and people could compare it to what circulates.

Interesting! I was going to offer up an mp3 to compare but my list says I don't have a Bradford 85, so I nipped over to the giography and it's not there either

Well, if it's Bradford 84 there's little point me posting an mp3 - just checked mine and it's really hissssy. Dunno who ripped it to disc but I must have got it around 2000-2001, it does sound like it was originally a pretty decent recording though.

little known fact, somewhere there is a copy of bradford 84 , possibly MX which is so good it nearly made it to album. the artwork was done and everything

Karst is right, the weeders don't seem to care about generation, but in general, it does seem to be worth hunting down masters and known gen stuff, because at least you know you're getting the whole gig. take the copy of Leicester Uni i picked up a few weeks ago. It includes gimmie shelter (which isn't on 'most' other lists i see)

One of the earliest boots I had was an excellent audience recording of Bradford 84, 1st generation from a guy who recorded it.

Sadly lost in the passage of time, but the bootlegger was called Karl & worked with my brother at a bed factory in Batley, West Yorks.

it was the same guy who was doing the leeds 85 sbd LP set, he wasn't a big sisters fan and never completed the job. He was seemingly more into the Cult and put out a few early cult and death cult sbd's on coloured vinyl.

So ... does anyone have a list of what DOES circulate with known gen? Although my interest lies 81-85 I may be able to access some latter stuff from low gen. Will have a looksie.

My list didn't show Gimme Shelter but it was on the recording when I checked.... I guess that's the peril of cut & pasting tracklistings Nothing after Adrenachrome though, even though most of the gigs around that time finshed with Sister Ray or Ghostrider. Is yours the same?!?
