We all know that roughly 2% of Sisters covers are actually decent (i.e. inoffensive--Lambchop, Paradise Lost, Alkaline Trio, that guy who did "Will I Dream?" and that Polish kid from this board. That might be less than 2% actually). The fact is that most covers of TSOM tunes are done by crap bands, and they usually end up on crap records full of other crap bands doing crap versions of Sisters tunes for crap labels (Cleopatra anyone?).

The Supersuckers, however, are not a crap band--quite the opposite in fact; they rock like a motherfucker: it'a all sex, drugs, twin Les Paul gold-tops, Satan and rock and roll. As Lemmy once put it, "If you don't like the Supersuckers, you don't like Rock and Roll;" and he knows from Rock and Roll. They are the self-proclaimed "Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World" (I didn't buy it either until I saw them live. If they're not the greatest, they're coming pretty damn close, and short of the Sisters, they're one of the few bands I'll bother to go see anymore).

The Supersuckers recorded a cover of "Afterhours" for the soundtrack to The Gift, a halfway decent southern gothic flick. It was rejected as not being country enough (they moonlight as a damn fine country band), and subsequently put out on a fan-club only CD (number 5 or 6, I think). It's no longer available for sale, and I have been scouring Soulseek for it with no luck (I know it's real--see the FAQ on the Supersuckers website for confirmation). I've managed to find all of the fan club CD's except this one. Have any of you heard it? Has anyone gotten hold of a copy of it? I am confident that it will turn out to be quite a good cover because they're quite a good band (hell, they made Ice Cube's "Dead Homiez" into a great rock song, and did a nice cover of Outkast's "Hey-Ya"). Let's face it...most covers of Sisters songs ought to be greeted with a mixture of trepidation and disgust. However, I actually expect something quite good from Eddie Spaghetti, Rontrose, Dan "Thunder" Bolton and whoever did drums on it (from the timeframe, probably Dancing Eagle rather than Murderburger I'd guess). Anyone know anything?

You mean you've got the 400 Bucks/Caliente split on orange vinyl or you've got Afterhours on there? I'm guessing the first option, since it's not on the CD version of the single.

Oh, and as for Alkaline Trio doing Lucretia, I think it was because Von wanted nothing to do with a goth/fetish group like Suicide Girls; everything else on that disc is original material, I think.

I put it in my soulseek wishlist over the weekend and a result banged up while I was out this afternoon from a user called Future_Flashbacks, he's offline now.

It appears to be from number five and I've got it ready to download as soon as s/he comes back online. Obviously if you don't have it by then I'll do the necessary.

Real drums, more guitars, very quiet vocal, a bit faster, a bit rockier. At first listening anyway it's not bad, "inoffensive" ish, as usual a bit pointless but not as bad as some.

Well, I thought that was pretty good. Kind of how Von would have liked it if he'd had the technology / money / personnel back in 84? The vocals I could take or leave, but then there's only one Von, isn't there?

and the same goes for that version of afterhours -not exactly the same but near enough (though nowhere as good) so why not go for the original for your film score? if it's because they are asking the band to come up with something you'ld have to be pretty dense to not offer up something original and reap the royalties.

Alkaline Trio is uninspired but not offensive.

Afterhours is better; mainly as it sounds nothing like the other Supersuckers stuff I've heard.

Hmm, singing doesn't even come near Von's, you can hear that from the first note... Not terrible, but don't think I ever will listen to it again apart from this time... It's missing that deep and dark underground feeling there's to the original, which is so great because it consists of so little IMHO...

Supersuckers - Much better than Alkaline Trio, but I have to agree with eastmidswhizzkid, still too similar to the original.

The Melvins - Venus in Furs - Now that's a cover version, as it's absolutely nothing like the original!

and while we are on the subject of sisters covers -and specifically Lucretia- did anybody ever hear it done by a Leicester band called Grumble Grinder? this offensive article actually exists on vinyl,though in depleted numbers following my snapping a dozen or so in half before the person whose possession they were in could stop me.

Thanks--I downloaded it at the office a while ago, but haven't had a chance to comment, as I've been drowning in finals and late papers (and I'm still not done).

I like it, a lot. In fact, I think it's fantastic. Someone commented that they didn't do it in a radically different style, and thus it wasn't good; Lambchop was cited as a comparison. Well, they did exactly what Lambchop did--they played it as though they wrote it, not the Sisters. Lambchop is an alt-country band, hence, it's played as an alt-country song. The Supersuckers are a rock and roll band owing much to the Ramones, AC/DC, Motorhead and American country music--and that's how they played it. I think it's quite good indeed. The only reason it sounds like the original so much is that both bands (the Sisters and the 'Suckers) are approaching music from overlapping perspectives. Would you have preferred a bunch Eldo-worshipping wankers stumbling through it in a Cleopatra-funded smoke and dry-ice filled studio or a bunch of punk rock chemical cowboys going through it? I'll take the cowboys, thank you very much--and I like the cock-rock soloing as well.

I've only just got round to following that like and, somewhat pointlessly as everyone else has already said it, what was the point of them doing that?

And just had a relisten to the Supersuckers one and I still like it.
