With the references littered about his work from Walt Whitman to Leonard Cohen and his unashamed debasement of women it had me thinking about eldritch's sexuality. Straight or gay???

I neither know nor care. He writes good songs, though.

"debasement of women" is a sure hint to hetero-sexuality though, isn't it?

Such threads are akin to thin ice. I will be libertarian about it because it has not gotten out of hand, but do not be surprised if it gets chucked at some point.

Good call Martin. I seem to recall a previous thread where as soon as the words 'libel' and 'lawyers' were mentioned the thread got initially edited by MF but eventually trashed.

Of course it matters. it matters to the context of his songs as his sexuality will be integral to his art. As it matters where he lives when he composes. Songs are a great insight into someone's personality and character and this question is as valid as 'Is Torch about Ben Gunn' or is "Giving Ground' about Hussey.

And i can't see why it's 'thin ice'. Im not screaming 'Eldritch is s**t stabbing fag' as i might as well be shouting about me. As i have never heard any mention of a female partner throughout his known career or from anyone I have met at the 137 sisters gigs i have attended.

This is 2005/6 and the question of someone's sexuality and it's reference to their art should not be looked upon as some homophobic reaction, which it isn't.

did it matter for Judas Priest? did anyone consider their songs less "metal" after his outing?

Very valid comments Mr/Mrs/Ms/Other Kane and I'm sure this would be an interesting and valid discussion to have on HL.

However, we have moderators who do a mighty fine job but after all, they are aware that this is a Public Forum which can be read by anybody.

And from memory if anyone did take (legal) offence to anything posted on here then dearest Quiffy carries the can as the website 'owner'.

Precisely why the thread was left open, because it has remained thus far amiable and non-slanderous. You must be joking to think that the topic is not a potential powder keg. Any questions on a personal matter are, be they sexual, religous, or political. Just use the phrase "Man U" and see it it ellicits an emotional reply from someone.

You also have attended over 100 gigs and have found no reference to a female partner? Sounds as though someone is playing devil's advocate.

From what I've read, he had a girlfriend called Claire back in the early days of the Sisters, had an affair with a girl from Germany during the making of FaLaA, and had a fling with a female journalist a few years back.

And all that from attending just 4 Sisters gigs.

Guess that's closed that subject, then.

Just a point: If Mr Eldritch took legal offence at his sexuality being questioned (not an outright statement being made about it mind, since Robbie Williams successfully sued someone for libel on that point, iirc), he would quite possibly be in violation of article 12 of the EU convention on human rights, since he'd be making a legal statement that homosexuality is a bad thing.

In the context of the songs, it is quite interesting, but Von tends to use a gender neutral "you", a boiler plate female name which fits the rhythmic pattern or a generic "she/her", but it doesn't rely on the gender characteristics of the person. This isn't a sign of ambiguous sexuality, it's a feature of good writing style - the more people who can easily relate to the song, the better. I for one have had no problem transposing the concepts and scenarios portrayed in Von's lyrics onto differing ones that I can see around me. This doesn't mean that he has a wishy washy ill-defined life, just that he's good at writing for a broad audience. Yes, certain things he's said that are supposedly about women do relate frighteningly well to scenarios involving guys, but that's just human sexuality. It would be interesting to know either way, as with any further understanding of what drove him to write a particular song, so I'm not particularly sure why people are making a big deal of it not being a big deal or otherwise

Edit: Laz, although that does invalidate the main point of Mr Kane's argument, it doesn't mean that he isn't gay (even though he probably isn't). The words "affair" and "fling" are characteristic of "Am I, Aren't I?" behaviour - nothing too deep. Granted, that's from your keyboard, not his, but...fook this, I'm reading deep enough to make my old English teacher worried

No, that wasn't aimed at you, more at those writing it off as having significance for anybody. It could be a troll, but it's certainly a valid question when asked outside of the context of one.
