was 2005 a good year for gigs?

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

was it me that was easily pleased or was 2005 a good year for gigs and albums?

Nine Inch Nails - tour and new album
The Mis sion - tour and DVD !!
New Model Army - tour and new album
Cardiacs - tour and two live albums
Sisters - great gig in Germany... but nothing new

I don't think I'm the only here listening to that lot above judging by the amount of old (and new) Sisters shirts I've seen a gigs last year.

whats 2006 going to bring us?
place yer bets... :von: :?:

This year I'm gonna write down all the gigs I go to.....I'm crap at remembering stuff.

Killing Joke @ Camden Barfly was rather special due to titchy venue.

Near Meth whatsit was memorable for a whole heap of reasons - nightmare 6 and a half hour journey (which should have taken 1 and a half) being hotter than I have EVER been at a gig before and I've been to some roasters! Having Johnny collapse slowly down my back was interesting also.

Pixies - for obvious reasons

NIN - for sheer giddyness on my part

Kills - new band to me and a very mesmeric dou they are

Be Your Own Pet - 17 year old Yanks who know what its all about.

Him http://www.pbase.com/gaztop/image/39015087 on several occassions at the beginning of the year .He's ALWAYS memorable and one of the best inbetween tracks performer EVER

Was the NME tour with Killers/Bloc Party/Kaiser Chiefs and thingy, this year? Most memorable due to watching Killers go from a band playing to no more than 80 people in Lincoln to fully fledged STARS. Awwww it was like watching yer kids ride a two wheeled bike without stabilizers.

Plus many more - it's not often I don't like a gig, there's usually something that redeems a poor gig i.e. friends, support bands

Oh and BSP too...they must be one of the most exhilirating 'last track' bands ever.

The three most rememberable gigs I attended, ever, were this year, so yes :notworthy:

That'll be the Sisters both in Tilburg and Lokeren, and The Kills in Antwerp, by the way :D

About par for the course these days, in full knowledge of the fact that it'll never be 1993 again.

NME - Joseph's Well - awesome, very, very awesome. The drugs may have helped.

REM - OT Cricket Ground - the second grooviest bald bloke on the planet.

VNV - Sheff Corp - every live gig should be like this (actually, JW was. The dr...yadda yablah de blah.

A festival is definitely required this year - even if all the bands are s**t, they're always a wild old weekend away. 8)
There is increasing evidence to suggest that Chris may have been being sarcastic.

it was an odd year for gigs for me, as i didn't really go out hardly at all because of my missus being preggers.
i had to get my head around the fact that the sisters tour was going to be impossible for the above reason, and that was hard enough.
but missing joseph's well (after an advanced hot tip-off from a very nice man) because the baby was born a week-and-a-half overdue was gutting -watching the days tick by from his due date knowing he had to be born at least the day before the gig for me to be able to go was terrible...but missing his birth would have been far,far worse.
NMA i did see and although they were very good it just ain't the same without rob heaton(rip).
motorhead were the best i've seen them for a long time (and they're always good) which was nice.
but the undoubted highlight of the year was the smurphs at bloktober. and i reckon it would have been anyway, even if you lot hadn't been there. ;D :notworthy: :notworthy:

05 was a really top year for gigs :notworthy:

Not in any order:

Sisters at Leeeds :notworthy: :notworthy:

The Mish : managed to catch them 10 times on the last tour, good gigs included Stoke, Manchester (more for the fun and games with one arsehole on the door) and Keighley. New DVD....

The Fall : Caught them 7 times this year, best was at Stoke were MES was on stage for about 7 songs and the band being on for 11 songs that was fun and Manchester, Sankey's Soap, dump of the highest order and totally rammed beyond being safe. Top new album as well.

Half Man Half Biscuit : Also watched these 7 times, highlights included Penzance 7/7, Went on the train via London and ended up watching the bus that was blown up pass us 2 mins before it went up  . Arrived in Penzance 40 mins before gig. Liverpool, exactly one year after John Peel's died and another stonking album.

The Smurphs at Leeds : Always a good gig from the smurphs with some top abuse from SG :notworthy: .

I saw a busker in the subway in Birmingham on the way to see the god-awful kaiser Chiefs. The busker wins.

Best gig : Poppies Reformation in Feb. Wins hands down.

Saw Laibach in Helsinki which was quite mad, a crowd of head-nodders and right wing types..

Skinny Puppy in the Astoria London, awful sound ruined it for me, though half the people there thought it ace but obviously know FA about sound engineering..

Missed KMFDM in Glasgow and London - a proper horror story..

Missed the James Ray Gangwar comeback because the dodgy goff band on before them blew the sound...

In all a mixed bag..

Saw this tour.....really loved The Editors.....thought the Cinematics were fabulous as for WAS....probably one of the best 'intro' bands who then ruin it all with the rest of the song....

Gigs of the year:

18th Comets On Fire at the Hobgoblin, Brighton
Crazy wee show in way too small venue!
20th Jan - Go Team @ The 100 Club
total madness - amazing show from Brightons finest. Felt like jumping up and down like a kid!! They could be so huge!!! (however they sucked later on at the Electric Ballroom...)
21st Jan - Julian Cope & Comets On Fire @ the Royal Festival Hall
Total psych kraut rock out carnage!! Copey back to his drug fried best. 2 sets, spent most of first in the crowd. Culminated in dismantling his mic stand and attacked himself with it in true Iggy Pop style. Lacerated stoumach. Nice!! Some of his new stuff is ok, some of it sounds truly awful! But some old classics were aired. Comets On Fire playing in a venue about 500 x the size of the Hobgoblin and at about 500 x the volume (seriously one of the loudest things I've ever heard) they totally tore the roof off. Incredible!!
24th Feb The Melvins @ The Electric Ballroom
Monster show!!! Dave Crover at his best!!! Buzz slaying all and sundry!! David Yow in a pair of blue shorts covererd in flowers!!
1st & 2nd March Slint @ The Forum
Note perfect performance. Weird but awesome!! Like sleeping with an old girlfriend....
14th and 16th March Boris @ Garage London and Cabaret Notts
Two really great shows from mad Japanese samurai doomers!
9th April Interpol @ Brixton Accademy
Another top Interpol show, better than the Forum - good fun aftershow. Top Saturday night out!
6th May Maximo Park at ULU (and Virgin)
Brilliant show from the North Eastern masters!! Fun in store as well.
16th May Arcade Fire live in Paris at the Elysees Montmarte! OFFICIAL GIG OF THE YEAR
Gig of the year? One of the best gigs I've ever seen! GENIUS CANUCKS!!!!
1st June Teenage Fanclub at the Astoria
AAA pass/side of stage/dressing room/drunk - brilliant brilliant night!!
2nd June Oneida at 93 Feet East
Oneida. What can you say. Bobby Matador, Kid Millions and Hanoi Jane we salute you!
8th June Dinosaur Jr ORIGINAL LINE UP !!! @ The Forum
What can you say..... tracks from 1st 3 CLASSIC albums only. J, Lou and Murph. Raw f**king ROCK power. So loud!! Better than 16 years ago!! Does it get any better than this?
4th July Black Mountain at the Metro
Canadian bands in the house again!! They can play - they can rock - they can trance out in Hawkwind style. ANOTHER WINNER!!!
10th August Devendra Banhart at Regents Park Bandstand
Ha ha - free drinks, cup cakes and sandwiches! DB and his band of merry pranksters play a short set. Sun setting over the bandstand, DB giving out drinks. It was a beautiful scene!
31st August Dinosaur Jr at Koko
Playing You're Living All Over Me in its entirety - mosh pit, amazing!!
16th/17th September Mudhoney @ Koko
Playing Superfuzz Bigmuff + early single. Does it get much better than this? Saturday night was almost the perfect Mudhoney show!!
20th September Steve Turner solo at the Windmill
best wee ST solo show yet - some cool new songs!
17th October - Sufjan Stevens at Shep Bush Empire
Americans are better musicians than UK folks. Cheer leaders. Bloody hell.
3rd November - New Pornographers at the hell hole that is 93 Feet East
Dreadful venue, great band. Actually AWESOME BAND
20th November - Breeders all star band at Blackheath Halls
4AD-arama

maybe not as good a year for gigs as 1989. But then again how could it be?
