I've no doubt flac is wonderful and lossless and all that,
but can someone tell me how to convert flac audio files to mp3 files
to play in my ipod, without
(a) spending a day and a half pissing around with audio tools
(2) spending 20 dollars to buy a new piece of software

and before anyone has kittens Ive no intention of weeding, trading
or doing anything at all with the files apart from my own personal use
on my ipod.

Danke. :notworthy:

un-flac the files to wavs and then use winlame to convert the wavs to mp3s

winlame is free - http://winlame.sourceforge.net

it uses the lameEnc thingumy which gives better mp3 encoding than most other tools ;)

I just do this using my regular mp3-converter, easy cd-da extractor which makes the files straight away into little mp3s, obviously for personal iPod use... Don't know what it costs to get a full version (as mine is a, err, trial :innocent: )

I don't know if there's any way to do it straight from FLAC to mp3. But any of the FLAC encoder/decoders will convert to WAV which you can then convert into mp3 using your favourite mp3 encoder. It's a pain in the neck, I know. But it's what I do (on a mac, using xACT to go FLAC -> AIFF, then iTunes for AIFF -> mp3)

Like you, I'm not trading or weeding the mp3s, just bunging them on my iPod.
