"31 seconds" NASA sample.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

I was wondering, would any of you happen to know:

a) Where the sample "31 seconds, and we're gone (going?) for an auto-sequence start" is from
and b) Where can I download it?

I'm sure it's something to do with NASA, and it's in a few songs (one by Dune, one by Gangwar, among others), and I was intending to use it in a song, but my efforts so far to find it have been fruitless.

Anyone know? ;D

ask mr ray himself? :D ;)

however:

http://shuttle.msfc.nasa.gov/MissionProfile.cfm

T -0:31.0 Auto Sequence Start
The final 31 seconds of countdown are the busiest, as the Shuttle's on-board computers take over the count, and every system on the vehicle operates on internal power. The Shuttle's three main engines (SSMEs) are sequentially started at approximately the T -7 second mark. When the engine controllers indicate that they are all running normally, the twin solid rocket boosters (SRBs) are ignited at the T -0 mark.

etc etc etc

sounds like fairly common nasa comms during shuttle takeoff. watch the nasa feeds on sat tv and i'm sure you can get a dozen of them ;)

True, but that particular one (found in Cobalt Blue) is from a specific mission, and I'm not sure which one, exactly.

So I'll need the mission name and hopefully a place to download the recording.

I know all NASA's works are in the public domain (as is all the US Government produces), so there shouldn't be any copyright issues.

I knew when I posted this thread it had a rather unfortunate title, but I was too lazy to think up anything else.

To prevent anything more, it's changed.

True. I could take it from Cobalt Blue, but there's a synth pulse/drumbeat in the background throughout the sample. :?

If my memory serves me correctly.. It's also used on the start of 1,000 Homo DJs' cover of Supernaut and also at the start of Laibach's "Mars" off the Nato album.

THough both probably have music playing over them.. :?

adventures beyond the ultraworld this supposedly samples lots of NASA space stuff (Gemini, 1st men on moon), BBC sounds, & the Tape Beatles' (now Public Works) record "Music with Sound" (their entire backcatalog is available for download as MP3, orbists should at least check out this album).
For All Mankind contains many of the NASA samples used by orb, this is the film that the Apollo soundtrack by Brian Eno was for.
"Ultraworld" is from an episode of Blake's 7, see here for script.
The Orb sampled from "Kondole/Deadcat" by Psychic TV on "Ultraworld". It's those trippy helicopterish sounds, I can't remember what track the sample is used in.
Lazlo's discog says: This album relies *heavily* on samples from the 'Digieffects J3 Special' sample compilation CD.
The Orb have used several, as it says above.

Here's the site should you need it....http://home.comcast.net/~star6n789/orbknow.html#samples

Hope this is of some help. :D

All of a sudden I remember a friend having an old National Geografic flexi with Space sounds on it (like the first moonlanding etc. - not much use to you anyway), but I've also seen another vinyl (a 12") with space sounds samples on it.

So normally you should be able to find that kind of things back there too, and I guessed as you're into vinyl that sort of things might interest you for this purpose...
