Emma/Uptown Ranking

Got any interesting thoughts on a set of lyrics? Any that don't involve the word "indeed"? Find yourself struggling to decipher all those obtuse references Von makes? Read "1959 And All That" and still no clearer? Nope, us neither. Postcards found lying in a skip around the back of the Chemists can be found here... Don't say you weren't warned.

Well, as I just made a quick transcription of what Von made of these lyrics, which will probably be a complete rubbish one (but anyhow):

What could it be with this thing that I seem to get as 'garden shed' ( ) that doens't seem to be in the original... Any more thoughts on why exactly this song and these parts of it...
When combining those ("garden shed" & "uptown ranking") two in a google search I seem to get something by some guy called John Moore, which I'm unfamiliar with, so...

It's a cover. Von only covers songs that amuse him, so it figures ;)

I'm aware it's a cover, I may even have the original somewhere. But when the Sisters are doing "mash up's" then it truly isn't the band I first saw in 1985.

NB this is not necessarily a bad thing.

<edit> rethink. It probably is in this case.

sounded to me like it was supposed to be emma but von forgot to start singing, and so in the end he did an impromptu burst of "uptown..."

the music is basically emma. guitars, bass line, etc etc. its just emma.

dunno if its chris or adam or both that join in towards teh end but that sounds like one of those things they could have been a rehearsal p*ss-about, and that ended up being done on stage after von f**ked it up.

quite amusing though whatever the reasoning behind it

I really doubt it was off the cuff. Herr Eldritch never does anything that hasn't been meticulously planned.

nah, its an aborted attempt at emma. i'd put money on it!

listen to the way it just ends... very abrupt. somehow "the nurse" knew that it was time to end the song, so stoppe dthe dok at the end of the next bar. probably the way von was howling gave it away - he's worked with him long enough to know that when he does that its building up to a climax.

otherwise they would have let the song take as long to build up as it does. its ages before eldo comes in with the vox... they never leave it that long. barring the odd track or two they seem to prefer 4 min pop songs where von starts singing after the first few "intro" bars.

i think he just missed his cue, couldnt work out a way of coming back in "gracefully" (the words would make it very obvious if he missed a verse, or even just a line) so decided to "wing it" and improvise ;)

at least one other member of the band knew the words and thus joined in. maybe they had already pissed about at rehearsals with some form of jam, maybe chris heard the riff and went "s**t! thats just like 'uptown top ranking'!!" and it all went downhill from there  i dont know. either way, there's just something about it that doesnt sound planned to me.

plus i like the thought that they could still manage to improvise after all these years, and with a tightly programmed drum & backing track :D

fair play to them

I just had a listen from the link posted on Dominion, deffo emma. Seems to me it goes wrong at the kick off,. Whoever is on "lead" guitar duty comes in too early, there was supposed to another chord before that then he should come in after that.

From that point Emma's knackered and t becomes a jam session.

Well, if it was but a jam session, it was an incredibly good one... I think that takes quite some nerves to do that in front of such an audience

And indeed, it sounds like it's not sounding like it was meant to be so... When the backing vocal(s) start singing along, it is done with a whole lot of doubt, or so it seems...

havent listened back but if you're right then it wouldnt surprise me. presumably adam would have been busy rehearsing with mc5 and chris was a fairly late recruit... maybe their minds were on other things...

listening to the recording of tilburg, they make a right hash of dr jeep too. by the time of thr 1st chorus eldritch is completely out because of the guitars

still, its rock and roll innit? who cares if its planned or not. :von:

yep, I was thinking that myself, I haven't got a chance to hear the Tilburg gig again but from my recolection one of the gitars had trouble getting the dr jeep tune right.
I don't know about Emma,it sounds good to me. Von seemd to like it aswel, or did he sing it that loud to fool us? :P anyway, we'll problably never know, it was something unique and i'm graetfull for that 8)

The cock-up would also explain why the setlist has it stated as Emma.

Reminiscient of the improptu "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" back in Chicago in 1991.

And even that was then given a regular outing for a few gigs after.

Even at the Pukkelpop Festival in 1992 where it wasn't sung a capella, Von fitted it in nicely to Sister Ray.

There isn't one, but I still have it from a friend in Lincoln.

Having no CD-Rs at the moment, weeding would prove rather a challenge. However, I CAN mp3 each file and put it into soulseek if that'll do for anyone.

To be honest, it's not a great gig anyway, just Sister Ray is worth it.

And while we're citing precedent for cock-ups, how about the "More" turned into improptu "Louie, Louie" in Leysin 07-10-93?

or the "so you want lyrics as well" (or thereabouts) alice from york racecourse festival -alice starts; von doesn't;quip; alice resarts.

and my absolute fave from nottingham rock city, black october tour:
band come on ;doktor plays intro to burn;guitars start as doktor stops.
quick burst of drum-machine ;doktor plays intro to burn;guitars start as doktor stops.
band give up :play heartland .drums f**k up at end.
von:"we have to attend to our machinery...."
.....(random abuse from audience -"fuckin' hippy wankers!"etc)
von:[two octaves higher and rising] listen, you can get these songs the wrong way and you can get these songs the right way:if you wait a couple of minutes we can get these songs the right way;so i suggest you shut up for a while and TALK AMONG YOURSELVES!"

but of course it's always planned! :innocent: :von:
