In the late 60s the Berkeley campus was so revolutionary it was nicknamed People's Republic of Berkeley.
:von: being a leftist, he must have liked the idea and rechristened his home region. Such sweet move. :D

EDIT : Leeds is in West Yorkshire. Don't forget.

The People's Republic of West Yorkshire is part of the larger People's Independent Federation of Yorkshire though.

It's not a joke that's original to :von: -- I remember a Tetley Bitter promotion in about 89 or 90 where they were giving away "People's Republic Of Yorkshire" T-shirts.

Thank you Badlander!

So why does he sell t-shirts with that on it - so his fans can espouse his leftist views as well? hehehehe

I don't know what annoys Andrew more. Fans that are goffs, or the fans that are hard lined right wingers.

here you go

In the United Kingdom, the Conservative MP Irvine Patnick coined the phrase 'Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire' to highlight the predominance of the left-wing of the Labour Party in the county.

Ah, thanks for the explanation :D

I think Francis was about to explain it to me - as a much more elaborated story though - at the boys' room in Tilburg, but as everybody got his drinks that night we didn't quite reach the end of the story

According to the wiki, 2003 as a logo on merchandise. https://sisterswiki.org/Sisters_XXX_Tour_Postcards. Possibly earlier in an interview?
The "South Yorkshire" version was in common parlance in the early mid 80s (i.e. when Von actually lived in the UK) when David Blunkett was in charge of the metropolitan council and you could travel anywhere within the borough for 30p, as in eastern bloc countries. The politics were never as radical in West Yorkshire.

Yeah, but West Yorkshire had ellecy that came on with a switch and running water, even in the student ghetto in Leeds back in the 80's lol

Well I was handsome and I was strong
And I knew the words to every song.
"Did my singing please you?"
"No! The words you sang were wrong!"

I think (but can't be sure) that I saw the PRWY T-shirt on sale at the 2001 20th anniversary tour. I may have my memories confused with the Sisters Gegen Nazis T-shirt though.
