As far as I know, the original singer of that song is Olivia Newton-John.
So, what it is about? Love story? Neeeee... It can't be... But who knows?...

It's Dolly Parton alright. Just about her husband being madly in love with a woman named Jolene, and she's begging Jolene not to take him, as she is so beautiful, she could have any man she desires.

It's a very simple and very straightforward song. No big secret or hidden meaning here.
As to why the Girls decided to cover this particular tune, I have no idea. Maybe just because it's a nice song ? Or maybe because Von wanted to sing a song from a very girlish point of view ? A man in the same position wouldn't say "Oh please don't take my girl". He'd rather say "I kill you if you take my girl". Testosterone and all that...

Wasn't about Burt Reynolds.............well..........the woman he was seeing while with Dolly Parton?
Being brave is coming home at 2am half drunk, smelling of perfume, climbing into bed, slapping the wife on the arse and saying,"right fatty, you're next!!"

I'd think it's simply that Eldritch has a certain fondness for campy heartbroken lovesongs. (Emma anyone?) Not unlike many others who seem to the outside a bit cold-hearted and cynical. I expect a cover of "All by myself" anytime soon(ish).
Put their heads on f*cking pikes in front of the venue for all I care.

My ex GF & me named my first Honda Prelude Jolene because she thought I cared more about the car that I did her.
I do miss that Prelude.
My second Prelude was called Hector after the lead charactor of the Morrissey song First of the Gang.
I haven't got a name for the Pontiac Firebird yet.

Dolly Parton, a legend in Country music in the U.S., is famous for “Jolene.” It’s a very catchy tune that people love to sing in at least three different keys while drunk. In Memphis. In a mobile home. But, like so many things in life, it’s all backwards. The problem is not with Jolene; the problem is with the man. There will always be more “Jolenes” for this guy, and that’s what has to be faced. Sigh. Btw, Dolly Parton’s new album, “Rockstar,” should be out by November.
